There is a "ring" of ceramic on the bottom, but it appears to have a lighter coating of glaze and our dishes show no sign of scratches or marks of any kind. They are circular, but imperfect in shape. In other words, if a person were to draw a circle freehand, roughly 8 or10 inches in diameter, that's roughly what the plates look like.
