This very expensive, jar-packaged, highly fragrant ‘Clarifying Mask’ from Tata Harper is aimed at oily blemish-prone skin. It has a slightly gritty texture and contains a high number of fragrant ingredients and volatile fragrant plant oils/extracts like lavender, sandalwood, wintergreen, citrus aurantium dulcis, and sage, to name only a few, and while I know some people like fragrant skincare, fragrance can aggravate, irritate, and sensitize the skin, and irritation can trigger inflammation and oil production at the base of the pores making blemish prone skins and redness worse.It does contain the AHA exfoliating ingredient lactic acid, but this will be of limited benefit in a rinse-off product like this which you only leave on the skin for 20 minutes. Lactic acid works much better in leave on products like skin serums and night treatments. This does contain some good skin-soothing ingredients and absorbent clay, but their benefits are negated by all the volatile fragrant ingredients. This also contains some good free radical fighting antioxidants but again these are let down by the unhygienic jar packaging.Why Jar Packaging Is A Problem.Good modern skin care formulations include antioxidants, cell-communicating and skin-repairing ingredients. However, you won’t get the benefits of these ingredients to your skin if the product you are using comes in a jar. This is because these ingredients are not stable, which means they won't be effective if regularly exposed to light and air, which is exactly what happens when you take the lid off and on a jar. Hygiene is, of course, another issue; dipping your fingers or a spatula into a jar transfers bacteria into the product, which also causes the important ingredients to further deteriorate, making them less effective. Skincare products really need to be in an opaque tube or airless sealed pump dispenser, particularly at this price point.
