It can be used with or without the table clamp and so far, I didn't need to use the clamp at all. I use it mainly for soldering metal and it is of great help to me.I bough in the past a Silverline vice which I never used in the end because it was very difficult to change the position of the body to the required angle for my work - a very frustrating vice which ended up somewhere in my loft. Then I bought the Stanley but I could see straight away that the clamp for the table will break in no time and the jaws were not aligned properly so I returned it immediately. Finally, I decided to buy this one, despite the price and I could not recommend it enough. It is in a completely different league compared to the other two vices I had.
