What exactly do you buy to re-fill this soldering iron, and does it come ready filled or empty?

It comes empty but it is filled using standard butane gas found at tobacconists etc but can use more expensive and refined butane. It fills at the bottom of the iron

Does the tip come off so its becomes a heat gun?

The tip unscrews. Not sure I'd call the result a 'heat gun' though. It also didn't hold much gas and I stopped using it because it didn't get hot enough.

Anyone used it for pyrography if so how does it perform?

We have not tested it for this purpose. Soldering irons are most often used for installation, repairs, and limited production work in electronics assembly. Kind regards Draper tools
