This actually works
I picked up one of these at TJ Maxx the other night as a gift to myself--came home and tried it out and have ordered another one here on Amazon to give as a Christmas present. The kit consists of a bowl, a microwave slotted tray to put your potato slices in, a mandolin style slicing blade, and a spiked handle to use to hold the potato so that you do not accidentally slice off the end of one of your fingers. I scrubbed a potato and sliced it with the blade--requires a bit more pressure than the blade on my big mandolin slicer but the slices were VERY thin and consistent and did cut pretty quickly. I arranged the slices in the tray, shook a little sea salt over the slices, put the tray on a paper plate and zapped it two minutes in the microwave. VOILA--potato chips! Crispy but NO additives other than what I chose to put on them. And they were tasty. I am of the school where I believe the microwave is an expensive clock/food warmer but not really worth much as far as cooking is concerned. Frozen vegetables? sure. Meat? NEVER. I've tried a couple of dessert things in the past and have always found the texture/taste unsatisfactory. So I was REALLY pleased that these potato chips tasted pretty much like potato chips--maybe even a little better since they were made from a fresh potato. We ate with catsup since they have a nice potato-y flavor--pretty good. My one criticism would be that this is a SMALL set--the tray doesn't hold that many slices and for a small-medium potato it took me three rounds in the microwave to cook all the chips. However--that's what? Six minutes? I think there are larger trays out there if I really think the time is a problem. I don't. The chips do shrink quite a bit, and I could see myself in future just trashing/composting the smaller end slices of the potato because they tend to fall through the cracks on the tray--but it's a minor detail. I like it and anticipate using it regularly. I hope my daughter likes it as well.

2 stars for the poor design all around - very hard to use
It does make potato chips... 2-stars because: This is one of those "it's frustrating" reviews, as the operability is (for me) inexplicable how things get so far from desing, sales, production, commercials. Simple reasons why, as you can see from the bowl.... the 'grip" you hold onto while slicing is about 4x to small. It should be a handle. (frustrating to hang on) The top should have an inner ring to secure the lid while it is in use / slicing. (the lid is wobbling on top, it is not secured in any way, it does not seal like tupperware, it is a plastic top with plastic small rim on the inside, nothing to secure it 'down' onto the bowl, and teeny rim to 'secure the top from slipping out of the bowl across the top. The slicer is not designed to do the job. - each side of the slicer blade bows back down to the lid - so that there is no way to get an even cut, (the center of the slicer raises higher and bows back down on either side. The slicer itself - after 3 potatoes, it had collapsed down to having no gap for a slice. I had to get a to find something to slide under it to get it back open (which did not last but maybe one more potato.- the slicer again - makes you wonder how the commercial person did it, because I am a cooking-person, and it is so dull there was not a way for me anyway, to manage to get any smooth slice through. The chip tray, since the top half 1/2 of the potato slice is not seated between the slots, the bottom half within the slots is brown by the time the top half will be crispy. Any less microwave time and the top half is 'flexible'' - so again, among all of these things, as you can see, every one of them could have been easily different, than what they chose to produce. (as in "why?") You'd have to cut the potato itself and scrape it to get an even cooking, as it is the tray itself that is what is heating up to make the chip. .Suggestion for the company: I am glad the 53 purchasers before me were enough pleased for the current 3.5 stars, as it must be a bummer to get low reviews. REDESIGN everything, start . . Goodness. I've just redesigned it after 3 batches of making 60 chips. And now, it has been thrown away. 8-(

You say potato, I say potato chips.
I was very surprised by this product. I ordered it for my pre-teen son, who had seen a video promoting it. He enjoys cooking and thought this would be a fun tool in the kitchen. The package arrived quickly. The product is as described, if not better than described. The bowl is a very thick, sturdy plastic. The built in mandoline slicer is a little small for regular size russets, but would work well with small potatoes. We ended up using a slicer we already had since our potatoes were too large.I was skeptical of what the final result would be, I mean, microwaved potato chips???!! Come on... BUT, they turned out amazing. Nice and crispy, just like store bought potato chips, minus the oil...Yes, it’s true, you would have to make many batches to equal a “full size bag of chips” as I’ve seen mentioned in other reviews. But as a snack, and a healthier chip option, this makes the prefect handful. And even if you need to make a larger batch, it’s microwaved!!! It doesn’t take that long to make multiple batches...I would highly recommend this product.

Awesome Microwave Potato Chip Maker
This is ingenious…..one idaho potato will give you about 40 chips! I have two of these so I can prepare the second batch while waiting for the first to finish in the microwave. The slicer is perfect but be aware there is no safety cover so when you wash it and store it, you absolutely must be careful. I slice the potato, put the slices in a bowl of cold water, pat the slices dry (I put a clean dish towel on counter covered with two layers of paper towels then use another paper towel to pat the chips dry), then to a bowl with about two tablespoons of olive oil and a bit of garlic salt, use your bare hands to coat all the slices then line them up in the circular holder! About 5-8 minutes later, you have perfect, crunchy potato chips! In the past I would cook the chips in the microwave on a large plate with parchment paper on it….you would have to keep turning the chips. This device really speeds the process…..only problem is that the chips are eaten BEFORE you have an opportunity to make several batches! Do not hesitate to buy this great chip maker!

Better than expected
This is amazing! I bought it as a christmas gift and the recipent just sent me a video of the chips he made. They are very crispy, thin sliced chips. The slicer works great too!Only complaint is it doesnt hold enough chips, but cook time is very quick for an easy, quick refill! We are both impressed with the outcome. Will definantly consider purchasing again.

Wasn't a good buy at all
Wasn't a good buy at all. Most of the crisps were soggy even tho I cooked them for suggested time. I also tried different time and also didn't work. Bit of a hassle trying to put potato into rack as well. Disappointing!

Two Stars
Not easy to use.

Not bad
They’re pretty good. I have to perfect the timing because I think they needed to be in longer because I had to use a knife to cut (the one on the lid of the item didn’t work. Maybe because I used it on sweet potato? I don’t know).
