Q: Will these work with normal laces?

Yes and no the limit is how much can be fitted through the hole when pressed "open" once releast they grip by pressure from the spring and so will work on anything that can be threaded throught them. However they work best on elestic because it is soft allowing for better "grip" and the stretch acts as a shock obsorber against pulling when needed. You asked about normal laces I don't think they would hold if used for shoes they just don't have the amount of grip to keep shoe laces tight.
