I decided to give it a try and the scent is fine and it really doesn't linger on the clothes. Cleans great. I did a test and re-rinsed the load. No residue in the water. Clothes were not stiff. I thought it smelled fine and the smell did not linger on the clothes so it really was of no consequence.
