Spot on
This book is an eye opener to where our country is today. It is written without political judgment but with the ability to think where we came from and where we want to go. I would like to see this book as mandatory reading in high school

You are right on point!!!
This has been my biggest complaint about the current education system. I agree with your assessment. Keep up the good fight.

Forget party affiliation and start thinking like the Americans we are intended to be.
Bringing back intelligent discourse rooted in a proper education of civics, our founding documents, and the Enlightenment period that influenced the creation of our republic is the only hope we have to truly be called We the People. Dreyfus gets to the heart of the problem and shows our current course is one of constitutional destruction. A must-read for all Americans.

Self rule is what was meant for us
Dreyfuss is correct to say that throughout history, those who came here shared one thing in common, that they all came from somewhere worse. They came here to get away from monarchial and dictatorial regimes, from poverty, from having no say about their lives. For instance, once, when England wanted a Navy, it sent agents to knock out men in taverns who awoke on ships, without any goodbyes to their families. As I view it, that is much of what we are seeing in Russia today with Putin's sacrifice of over 100k men, and for what? In response to such cruelties, countless numbers choose to come to this young country, to experience freedom, to be their own person in a good, hardworking, caring way, not to be usurped, but to cooperate with its building. At least, they used to come here to assist peacably within the boundaries of a free society. But those ideals of freedom and liberty got in the way of singleminded autocrats who want(ed) everything their own way, and so, the study of civics within the classrooms of America had to go. Instead, what students have been hearing for fifty years is social studies, a second rate mentioning of things that sound nice but contain nothing of the rich content of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Citizens today run for offices without any notion of what political service means, what it demands, how it should aid the little man. Instead, we have administrations swallowed up with greed and a people without power or credentials enough to know what to do about it.In the least, civics must again be taught in the grades below graduation from high school. Just what is civics? It is defined as the study or science of the privileges and obligations of citizens. Civic education is the study of the theoretical, political and practical aspects of citizenship, as well as its rights and duties. The mind must again be put into gear in a way that proves we know the benefits of freedom and are willing to promote what it truly is, to share it, in fact, to form groups that encourage its reawakening.

Very thought provoking
While you might not agree with all Mr Dreyfuss' opinions, his take on many issues are spot on, in my opinion.

We...the people...
Dreyfuss clearly reveals his love for his country and his contempt for the direction of the current civics discourse—that is—if there is any civil discourse left. I admit, I agree with most of his thought-provoking ideas. Not all, but most. It's a good start. Can we all agree on the Preamble of the Constitution, at least? This is where Dreyfuss hits it out of the park. Democrat? Republican? No. Let's start with American. From there, oh, the possibilities!

Truly a must read for all Americans
I thought the author did a great job in describing the shortcomings we have developed by years of neglect of not teaching civics . The opinions are not political but insightful and well expressed. The author invites us to participate in this discussion with every American, not just your political party of preference.

Very good and important subject
Very good and important subject. America's education system needs to bring the history of America and what America achieved as a result of the war of independence, to the top of the curriculum. The home of the brave and the land of the free.

The ABC of Supporting Our Children
I saw actor Richard Dreyfuss talking about One Thought Scares Me on a segment of 'The View' on YouTube; and he spoke with such common sense I was compelled to buy his book.Even though I haven't read this book yet, I'm always impressed when people stop pandering to the mob mentality and look at raising children with realistic, healthy boundaries and focusing on where society and the education system is letting our children down.🦋
