Does this work with the other set (horizontal build) - would my pieces work with this?

I do not know. This is the first set I bought.

What ages is it designed for?

I bought these for my 7 month old grand daughter. At that age they do not 'construct' anything. However, she was completely fascinated by the moving gears and soon wanted to turn the gears herself. This helped her hand eye co-ordination. However, I strongly recommend that you buy one of better quality. These do not stay together. The joining mechanism is flimsy.

What is the size of the space between the teeth of the gears?

I don't remember. I bought this decades ago (my son's are now in their early 30's) but they both loved this toy as toddlers and played with it for years! Both on the autism spectrum it really held their interest and they never got their fingers caught.

What is the diameter of each gear? I’m making an acrylic board to use with the gears and it has to be exact.
