Fluidmaster PRO45B Fill Valve with Brass Shank - Black

This is a very good solution for anyone who needs to replace a cistern fill valve. It is solidly constructed, comes with comprehensive instructions for easy fitting and functions quickly and quietly. It features a special damper in the inlet pipe which means there is little noise - and no 'thump' or vibration in the supply pipe when it shuts off. Recommended.

An old ball valve wouldn't stop dripping even with washers replaced. Decided to replace with this newer valve system instead of another ball valve. Once installed have no probs...& it's a lot quieter! But installation didn't go without its problems...because of existing setup as opposed to fluidmaster. Firstly the original plastic back nut to be removed from sistern was a large hexagonal shape and full of old gunk along the thread. Too big for normal spanners to remove and too confined for heavy duty stuff to get a grip. Got around this by placing a chisel on the left edge of the nuts flat surfaces and hitting with a hammer..it soon started twisting free! Once I had the fluidmaster in place I found there was very little room for manoeuvre...I positioned the narrowest part of the float away from the cistern wall with millimetres to spare...which led to the u shaped wire hook in the toilet handle lever catching the floats mechanism when pulled. Hacksawed into it untill it was easy to bend inwards with pliers. I never bothered replacing old fibre washer in the pipe connection (should do this really) but instead put a couple of wraps of ptfe tape around the copper thread of the unit before attaching to water system. Hand tighten everything it said..Nope..turned water supply back on...water was dripping out...from both back nut and main connection. Tightened both up slightly with spanners...did the job..almost...hands slightly wet at the touch of each bolt....at intervals..wiped both areas dry with tissues...tightened each time slightly until no wetting whatsover...job done. However..the extra tightening of the main connection made fluidmaster lean to the cistern wall slightly whereas the float would now stick. Had a wooden wedge shaped dowel to hand to wedge inbetween the cistern wall & the red cap untill the float was free..applied glue around the dowel/cistern wall (NOT the red cap which might need opening at a later date). Checked the backing nut again...this shift led to some slight seepage..a slight tighten again until it stopped. Hallelujah!!! Just want add here..in my experience of changing original ball valve washer..and opening the top of fluid master for a flush/washer replacement....bath taps are lower...turning on both bath tap and cold water tap downstairs reduced water flow to cistern to zero without having the need to turn off main stop cock. (Mine's awkward to get to). This massive review was brought to you in lockdown!

We had a job done by a plumber, and as usual he'd used the cheapest parts to save money. (the fill valve he used cost around £11 I think.The fill valve was dripping and wouldn't close off properly.Took a chance on the Fluidmaster after reading a few reviews, and watching a few videos, and it's almost silent when refilling. The other one was like a jet taking off when it was re-filling.Dead easy to fit.There's a small insert you put in the end of the threaded brass end part, if you have high pressure. I used that part and the fill valve works great. I didn't try it without so I can't say what difference it makes.We have another toilet that is extremely noisy when filling up and I'm going to change the valve for one of these when I get time.

It is worth paying a few pounds extra to get a well made valve like this rather than a cheap model - a cheap one failed in the night after 6 months and brought my kitchen ceiling down. The bottom flange is injection moulded onto the brass inlet, making it watertight and much more rigid than cheap models. The rubber washer seals between the flange and cistern base and you can get a good seal just by turning the nut hand tight. On the cheap models, the flange is loose and the seal is made by compressing a tapered rubber washer between the inlet pipe and cistern entry hole - it needs a lot more pressure to get a seal and is prone to leaking.

We've a push-button loo in our new place. I've worked with traditional ballcock-based pull-handle loos in the past, but this approach was all new to me.And when our cistern started filling in a repeatedly stop-start way, clanging the pipes each time it did so, I had to find a way of fixing it.So, I watched a few YouTube videos. One plumber recommended this device. Checking reviews on other sites indicated that it's highly recommended by professionals. Notably, there's also a video by Fluidmaster itself explaining how they recommend fitting the valve, which is worth a view.The price of this item goes up and down on a daily basis, so I'd keep an eye on it for a few days if I were you.Fitting it in my case was easy and took 30 minutes. Admittedly I'd had a rehearsal a few days earlier removing the old fill valve to see if it could be repaired.But this is basically a swap-in part, in a system designed to be both modular and to avoid interconnection. It looks bigger in the picture here on Amazon, which worried me. I worried the brass shank fitting was too large for my existing attachment. But I took a leap of faith based on that YouTube plumber's recommendation.Before installation, I just adjusted its length/height to match the existing valve. I also fitted the small in-pipe flow regulator widget they provide. We're mains-fed and the water pressure isn't amazingly high, but I figured the flow regulator would help reduce noise. And it does. Even with the flow regulator in place, the cistern fills in less than a minute. It's not silent, but the bottom-filling approach of this valve means it's more of a quiet hissing sound, compared to water being poured onto water, which is the sound the previous valve made. There's no bang or clang when the cistern is full.Once fitted and with the water turned back on, I had to adjust the little thumb screw to optimise the water level in the cistern to just below the overflow pipe. That wasn't hard, and was completed after a few test flushes.All in all, very happy. It's certainly a lot less fussy than the ballcock valves of old.

Good for the money, quiet flush and easy to fit. Fitted in 10 minutes. The only one thing is that they should of supplied a brass nut, which came with a nylon nut.

My old filling valves on two toilets have been giving me trouble by leaking and tormenting the pump on and off. I've found a cheaper variant with plastic shank of this fluidmaster but ordered the brass one online, as brass supposed to be better, more reliable, right? Well have a read how what supposed to be a simple and easy install as with the first toilet (using another valve) turned to be a lengthy pain in the....I have to mentioned, that despite not being a plumber, I have experience in installing and repairing a lot of stuff, including plumbing.- Installation odyssey:Installing the valve inside water reservoir was super easy. Despite weakish looking seal - no leaks. The problem appeared where was least expected - upon connection it to the water.In my case the water is supplied via a brass pipe, which obviously does not have much flexibility if at all. As much as I tried to align the shank with the pipe and took my time to slowly turn the nut, still it managed somehow to get a slight angle (the nut against the shank).What you think happened when I opened the water supply? Yes, live scenes from titanic. Upon unscrewing it back, horror scenes, the nut made of harder steel, cut away strips of brass from the brass shank. As a result - a painful removal of the brass and a damaged brass shank in a ugly way.Here important is to mention that the shank thread is very sharp and feels like it can cut through your skin if you'd press on it a bit harder. So the edges are very thin. In comparison, on another fill valve that I've installed on the first toilet, from flomasta, the edges are more rounded and smoother. Being so reduces the chance of them being cut away by the nut thread.What followed was a series of painful on and offs, with PTFE tape, on both the thread and the brass olive. All useless.I have resolved it just by cutting off the damaged piece of brass shank, taking my time to perfectly smooth it out and changing the fiber seal too, which is not supplied.- Noise:Listen to the video on close to max setting on your phone. This will give you an impression about the noise it makes. Disappointing despite being advertised as very quiet. The flomasta in the first toilet is a lot quieter. This is an important aspect and becomes very noticeable especially if you use the toilet during the night, when everybody else is sleeping. I have to mention that I tried using the supplied, pasta looking like silencer and despite installing it correctly - it made no difference in my case. Eventually I took it off as noted also by a plumber in the comments - they create issues in a short period of time.- Filling speed:Happy in this regard, it is really quick and quicker than flomasta, although about 5 seconds difference on a full tank. With this fluidmaster it takes about 30 seconds to fill in the full reservoir. Since filling the water always makes my 800W water pump work, I bet if I would've changed the fill valve 8 years ago when moved in the house, throughout the years it would've resulted in substantial energy = money savings.To summarize:I have mixed feelings. Even if the shank did not give me issues and it might not give issues to you - I still would give it a 4 star for the noise it makes. But the whole story with this fluidmaster valve gave me so much pain that I can't just forget it.Note - it can go smooth for you and be quieter, depending on your water pressure, etc. Just keep in mind, the brass thread is apparently very naughty and a slight angle or too much pressure your plumbing trailer becomes a series.Stay well and dry haha!
