Is there any built in guarantee or do we need to buy the 'amazon protect 4-year breakdown & accident cover' ?

There is a one year warranty from manufacturer. I was a senior manager with an international consumer electronics company, I never take our extended guarantees as they are just a source of great income for retailers. As most faults occurs within the first three months you are covered for one year anyway. This is a great radio, I had a Roberts before, this is far better.

Height width and length

Hi, I have just measured my Radio, and these are my findings :- Height - (including 'feet' but with carrying handle and telescopic aerial down) is 137mm. Width - (with carrying handle in 'parked' position) is 95mm. (With carrying handle up) is 77mm. Length - (including knobs) is 253mm. Hope this is of help to you.

is it safe to leave it plugged in with the mains switched on all the time?

With any device with an ac/dc mains transformer built-in, there is always heat generated in the conversion process. As this is not a clock radio, tolerances may be lower and I would leave it plugged into the mains all the time at your own risk. I see no reason for doing so with this radio as presets will remain even if there is no power, i.e., will not be lost. Hope this helps.
