Review: Great product and price - Great product and great price
Review: Extremely useful, a bit fiddly to apply properly - I have used this product on hundreds of plants over 6 years now. So I do have a pretty precise idea of how effective it is, and and can compare between plants which were treated and plants which were not. My experience is however limited to vegetables (tomatoes, squashes and pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatilloes, cape gooseberries, chillies, herbs, strawberries and a few more), and flower plugs in baskets and pots. In my experience, this product is more effective than using grafted plants, to an extent that I stopped buying grafted plants. This opinion is shared by a gardener I know who used to graft his own tomatoes (a pretty time consuming activity). It is also more generally effective than spraying plants with aspirin solution (but I would still do that, at least with tomatoes and strawberries, I think it gives them an edge as for productivity and disease resistance, and scientific tests seem to confirm that). So, what does it do? Essentially, it creates a network of fungii which are symbiotic to the roots and extend more than the roots can. The fungi feed on secretions from the roots and deliver nutrients to the roots, extracting them and processing them from the soil. This is important, because it means that, in order to be effective, the fungi needs to be in contact with the roots. It is a natural phenomenon which happens all the time in soil and benefits all kinds and sizes of plants. How to apply it? If you look around you might see videos and advice from people who do not really understand how mycorrhizal fungi work. So you will see them spreading it around and watering it in like it was fertilizer. That is a waste and will not benefit your plants, but maybe for trees with large roots, if you spread it very close to the roots. The right way is to apply it to the roots. For potted plants, I normally wait until the plant is large anough to have filled the pots with roots, so I can extract the plant and the root ball will be still the same shape as the pot. I then dig a hole in the soil large enough for the pot to fit in tightly. Then I insert the plant in the pot and water in and around it, and wait a few second for the water to seep in. Then I pull off the pot, this will leave a wet hole exactly the same size as the pot. At this point, I can sprinkle a spoonful of fungi on the sides of the hole. Most will fall to the bottom and the rest will stick to the sides. I then extract gently the plant from the pot and plug it in the hole, compress a bit and water abundantly. This ensures that the fungi will be in contact with the roots in all directions, and I believe it benefits the plant the most. Besides that, the price of the fungii went up over the years quite a bit, it is worth keeping an eye on the product page and wait for the times the price is a bit lower. I plant around 40-70 plants per year, and use between 1 bag and half and two full bags. Make sure to close the bag when stored, to protect it from humidity, and do not leave it in full sunlight, because excessive heat can damage the fungi.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can you use this product with seed, maily veggies, or should I go for a water soluble product?**
A: No. The product is a mycorrhizal fungus that promotes secondary root growth of established primary roots in eg bare root trees or shrubs. It is not a fertiliser and not a growth hormone. The fungus exists in a symbiotic relationship with the root hairs - ie the roots provide the mycellium of the fungus with water and minerals , and the fungus breaks down any carbohydrate products that the plant can't, turning them into simple sugars like glucose for plant energy.

**Q: does empathy mycorrhizal assist growth to begonia tubers mine are slow making root growth**
A: Not sure but begonias love heat underneath and that will make the roots grow. Empathy should in theory help as well

**Q: Can this be used for bare root roses**
A: Yes. But you must, using the small blue spoon provided inside the packet, sprinkle an amount of the substance just enough to cover the dampened roots BEFORE planting. ( Remember to soak the bare roots in a bucket of water for 15 -30 mins before planting and never plant too deep - always to the original soil mark when supplied - or you will get suckers. ) The fungi promote secondary root growth resulting in a much stronger plant.

**Q: Does Rootgrow contain Ectomycorrizal fungi which Birch trees require ?**
A: They contain a mixture of both endo and ectomycorrhiza and it is widely used in the forestry and landscaping trade for all types of evergreen and deciduous trees,
