GOOD FUN AND A GREAT CONFIDENCE BUILDER
I brought this for my daughter for Christmas. She decided to take Art at GCSE level but was finding it a bit of hard work, mainly due to a lack of confidence in her own ability. However, within a few days of Christmas and a few pages of this book later, we now have sketches all over the house and she is really enthusiastic about going back to school and showing off her new talent and belief in herself! I might even have a go myself!

I bought this book after being commissioned to do some illustrations in a similar sketchy style to Quentin Blake. Although my finished illustrations didn't look anything like this, it was great to be able to "unlearn" everything you've come to understand about drawing and go back to trying to nail the essence of a person, place or object without casting a critical eye over your work! I'm only half way through the book as it's great to dip in and out of but have really enjoyed the exercises. This would be a great book for children who are developing their creativity, and adults alike who haven't drawn in a lot time, or just want to approach their illustrations from a new angle. And, of course, Quentin's illustrations throughout the book are just charming!

A must have bit of fun
This is such a lot of fun. It's a nice size - not small and mean but not big and hard to hold on your lap either. You get an artists pen and two water colour pencils with it in their own little pencil case so an ideal gift. There is plenty of gentle humour, lots of hints and tips, no huge scary spaces to fill, plenty of suggestions for when your mind goes blank and you learn lots without ever getting bored or even feeling like you're being taught. I did actually email Klutz to tell them how much I liked their product and they emailed back the same day - nice to find a seller who cares about their customers even after they've sold them something! I'm 58 years old and doing a BA correspondence course right now so this was a breath of fresh air and a break from formal learning. I had to start drawing straight away, so tempting was it. Absolutely deserving of 5 stars and more.

M E R A V I G L I O SO!
In perfetto stile Q. Blake

For me, not the kids
I was on a mission at my local kids' bookstore to find a birthday present for my daughter's friend. This book was not something I had planned to pick up, and for myself rather than the seven year-old I was supposed to be shopping for! This copy from Amazon was sent to a friend.Drawing for the Artistically Undiscovered, is by Quentin Blake (yes, illustrator for Roald Dahl's books) and John Cassidy. You are supplied with a pen, and two water soluble pencils - red and black - and no eraser! It is a great way for anyone to get into the spirit of drawing. This excerpt from page 7 pretty much sums up the spirit of the book:"... sneak into the heart of your subject by going direct. We're not so much interested in the appearance of something, so much as the 'something' itself.""Think of it this way: An effective poem wastes no words on its way to the core of its subject. A successful drawing wastes no lines on the same trip. One can spend weeks on a marvelous painting of a rabbit, accurate to the tiniest detail - and yet still miss its essential rabbit-ness. And then dash off a funny little sketch in a few lines - and pin that bunny's soul to the paper."
