Comfortable, reliable fountain pen that’s perfect for everyday writing
I’ve been using the LAMY Safari Umbra fountain pen regularly, mainly for note-taking and general writing, and it’s been a really dependable tool. The first thing you notice is the ergonomic grip. It’s shaped in a way that naturally guides your fingers, which makes it comfortable to hold for longer writing sessions without fatigue. The lightweight plastic body also helps — it doesn’t feel heavy or cumbersome, even after extended use. The medium (M) black steel nib writes very smoothly. There’s a nice balance between ink flow and control, producing clean, consistent lines without scratching or skipping. It works well on most standard paper and feels quite forgiving, which is ideal if you’re not constantly adjusting pressure or angle. In everyday use, it’s a very reliable pen. It starts writing quickly, and paired with LAMY cartridges or a converter, the ink flow remains consistent. It’s also quite durable — it feels like something designed to be used daily rather than kept as a display piece. The design is simple but distinctive. The matte Umbra finish gives it a more understated look compared to brighter Safari versions, which I personally prefer for a more professional feel. The only minor downside is that the grip section, being textured plastic, might not suit everyone’s preference, and the cap can feel a little firm when posting or removing. Overall, this is an excellent everyday fountain pen — comfortable, consistent, and very reliable. A great choice for students, professionals, or anyone wanting a dependable daily writer without fuss.

Excellent Writing with this pen!
This is a great pen: it is light in weight; the grip is shaped with two slightly indented panels to increase comfort and stability. and best of the all, the nib is excellent and so the ink flows freely and evenly. It is very reasonably priced.

Super Fountain Pen at a great price point
This is a my first fountain pen since school days and I have been so impressed with it. It’s great value for money and is very comfortable to hold and write with. It’s really smooth and flowing too. No blotches or having to shake it to get the ink flowing through. German engineering shines through it. I chose the medium nib , you can purchase the finer nibs to use too which is a bonus. It doesn’t come with any cartridges so I ordered Lamy ones too which I found easy to insert. Lamy also sell a converter so you can use bottled ink if you prefer but I’ve not tried it. Overall , I’m really happy with my purchase. It’s real quality , looks stylish and delivery was speedy

Pen
Great pen, writes really well and is super comfortable to write with. The pen is ment to be steel black but it has more of a midnight purple / blue look which is fine.

Good value pen which writes well
Excellent pen. I purchased this as a result of several online reviewers and I was not disappointed. I went for the medium nib which suits my journaling well. It is comfortable to the grip and writes well

Surprisingly inexpensive and surprisingly good
Lamy was a brand once known and accepted as being a quality and price competitor to the rather expensive Mont Blanc brand. This is one design that is very affordable and which could be given to someone starting secondary or tertiary education or as an alternative to the disposable ballpoints or gel pens often used as it is often claimed that writing style improves with such pens. The concept of filling a pen with ink from a bottle would be a new experience to many of the younger generations. To help keep pricing low, the body is all plastic and the nib is presumably steel although in an anodised finish to match the black body. The cap is a push fit with a substantial metal pocket clip. The barrel is pierced to provide a window through which it is possible to check ink level. The feel of the pen is lightweight and rather fat in the body which, with its profiled shape and grip, make it very comfortable in the hand and between the fingers but its writing abilities belie its low price. As with any new fountain pen, the nib will need to be primed with a fingertip dampened with a little water or saliva but the ink will soon flow. There are other pens (some almost certainly Oriental in origin) that write less well and are much higher in price. An expensive pen (now £500-plus) given new and when far less expensive than today, despite three factory changes of nib, never did write as well as this. The pen as supplied is set-up for cartridges, and one is supplied although not engaged but will be on removing the cardboard spacer ring and tightening the barrel, but you can add an inexpensive filler adapter to enable use of bottled inks if for no other reason than the wider choice of available colours and the option to choose whichever brands works best for you or with the pen. Lamy's bottled inks (now and historically) tend to be gritty and often clog the pen as may their cartridges, which would require thenib section to be rinsed and dried before re-use. Adding the filler adapter relieves the pressure when trying to find replacement cartridges in emergency situations. Personal practice was to use bottled ink by default, keeping a cartridge or two available as a standby when away from home or the office. In the event that the nib wears, is broken or you wish for a change to a different width or style, unmounted spares are cheaply available and are supposedly simple to remove and replace. So impressed with its performance and price, another was almost immediately ordered in blue so that the ink colour (matching the body colour) used could be easily identified. If you are thinking about adding another in a different colour, they have a shiny finish to all extenal parts.

Comfortable to use
These pens are excellent for the money. Unfortunately you do need to buy the converter separately, which is added expense. I use fountain pens for art work as well as writing, and use inks with particles in them . These cope well , they don’t clog , as some of my pens do , and the writing is smooth and the way the pen is molded it is more comfortable to use over a long period of time. I have 5 pens so far in this range , as I like to have different colours of ink available to use. I have other makes , but these at present are my favourite.

Fantastyczne
Zazwyczaj wolę stalówkę F, ale ta M jest cudowna, płynie po papierze. Świetnie się pisze bo pióro doskonale leży w dłoni!

Good.
Very good fountain pen for any age, including a teenager or older, and perfect for everyday situations. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is it’s a wee bit overpriced, but fountain pens are expensive anyway so quite good price for a fountain pen with that quality.

Good way to start into the world of pens
This pen has made me fall in love with writing after all these years on a keyboard. I was searching for the right feel while writing, along with the perfect ink delivery. Not only does this pen give me this experience, but it has also helped me start correcting my grip. It's a process, but I love it
