Buy Kana From Zero!: Learn Japanese Hiragana and Katakana with integrated workbook. First Edition by Trombley, Mr. George, Takenaka, Ms. Yukari (ISBN: 9780989654586) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Must have! - For what this book is meant for, it helps and does its job! It specifically aims in helping people learn the kana which will be needed for if you plan to go to Japan as things are more likely to be in kana in oppose to being written in Romaji so this is a must have to learn! Review: A great way to learn hiragana and katakana. - This has greatly improved my understanding and ability to use both katakana and hiragana. The first half is included in Japanese from Zero 1 and the second in JFZ2, however I found it useful to have the extra practice. The extra practice sheets added to each chapter are useful for even more practice of the specific characters that are harder to remember. I will continue to buy books in the JFZ! series as they are all of good quality and have helped me immensely.

I decided to pick this up before JFZ: 1 (ordered alongside this book ready) as I want to master the Kana syllabary in terms of writing etc. As you'll see for all reviews on any of the JFZ book series the books are very methodical going through bits step by step so that it's not overwhelming! I just can't wait to start being fluent in Japanese down the line! がんばろう!

Good but there are problems
Lesson 1 and already a mistake あう for blue. Some parts lacking information, for example, why does in lesson 1 red is akai あかい and later in lesson 2 it is just aka あか ? I know one (had to look up) that one is adjective and other noun but was it so hard to just mention it. Also why do we need to know how ray fish えい is in lesson 1. It is not even the common word. And there are lots of other words that may or not make sense anymore and you need to look up as you are not sure if it is a mistake or not (which can be a good or bad thing, depending how you look at it). Overall, good to learn kana but forces you to google to make sure.

I found this book to be a great companion to From Zero #1 and #2. It focuses only on Kana (Hiragana & Katakana), and includes some simple grammar and vocabulary. Ideally read and complete this book first, as it makes #1 & #2 easier, but is not a must. I think it was value for money.

I cannot say enough good things about the Japanese books from this series and authors. I started using Rosetta Stone to learn Japanese, but was frustrated when Rosetta Stone did not explain why there were exceptions to sentence and word use. This and other books in the series do an excellent job in helping to learn the language but also give you practice in writing the language in all forms of Japanese alphabets. They are short chapters that can be done in 10-15minutes. I can't imagine using any other books at this point.
