Do sandisk sd cards work in this recorder? i've put mine in and it doesn't seem to register at all, jst keeps saying no sd card

Was the card formatted to anything else than FAT 32?? If yes, re format on a pc and re try formatting via the H5. Is it recognised on a PC? If no, faulty sd card. If yes, maybe a faulty H5. I use Sandisk extreme pro 32 GB SD cards without a problem.

Can I download an mp3 backing track into this device as accompaniment to recording my sax ? Sorry not a techie !

No I don't believe you can, it's a recording device. You could have the mp3 on a phone and use the line in to have the audio playing, then it will record the audio and your playing at the same time. Be sure to use the headphones to get the levels right.
