Great case. It’s pretty heavy, especially after you put a rifle in but to be expected. Works very well if you make a custom cut out for your rifle. You can buy extra foam layers and have custom cuts for various guns too. A white ink sharpie marks the foam well.

Nowhere in the Pelican website or here on Amazon can one find the information that pertains to Airline travel. The USA Airlines all have the same limitation and that is 62 total linear inches. That is Height X Width X Deep of no more than 62 inches when added together. The Pelican 1700 is the ONLY PELICAN case that falls under the approved airline guidelines for both size and approved gun/rifle carry. It is 38.5" Height X 16.5" Wide X 6" Deep. That equals exactly 61 total linear inches. This measurement includes the handles folded and also the wheels, even though the wheels do not protrude past the case. Plus, the case, rifle and padlocks do not put the weight past the 50 pound limit with USA Airlines. The case has 4 metal infused locking rings on the outside. I travel a lot and carry my AR-15 inside. It fits perfectly and with 4 padlocks, I am well above all the government and airline requirements. The case comes with 3 separate thick foam pieces that are the exact size of the inside of the case. Pelican recommends the middle foam be cut to mirror the AR-15 or other rifle you are carrying. Just remove the middle foam and lay the foam down on a hard surface, trace out the rifle, cut the foam and the rifle fits snug and does not move during travel. Remember NEVER carry the rifle loaded or bullets inside the same case. Also the bolt action part of the rifle DOES NOT require a cable lock through it as long as you lock all 4 of the outside locking rings with padlocks. Yes, PADLOCKS and NOT CABLE LOCKS. The airlines do not like cable locks as they get caught in conveyor belts. Just 4 simple, but sturdy padlocks on the outside is all the locks you need. Ammo can be carried as well but you must put it in another case, suitcase or even an ammo can. All of these must ALSO be locked. Keep in mind that some states wont allow you to arrive there with a gun or ammo of any kind. Check with the state you are flying to so you can make sure, but you know the states I am referring to without even having to look them up.

I purchased this case to fit a Sharps rifle and accessories. It works very well.
