There are so many products on the market, it's difficult to know where to begin. After reading reviews, this 'Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Pan' seemed ideal, and I'm pleased to say, it appears to be excellent so far. I was expecting my cats to use one litter tray each, however, they share one. These are brothers and indoor cats, so it may be different for other cats.Firstly, this product ARRIVES IN A HUGE BOX - From memory, the packaging was approx (L) 137cm X (W) 50cm X (D) 50cm. For some reason the hood and litter tray are packaged next to each other (lengthways), as opposed to the product already being assembled. I'm sure Amazon have their reasons for packing the product this way!Below are some tips to help should you decide to purchase this product and I'll try to include photos:ASSEMBLING - Having read through reviews, I was expecting to have problems with the sliding clips used to connect the hood and litter tray together. Yes they are a bit stiff, and you do need to ensure they are in the locked position, otherwise you could end up with the tray disconnecting from the hood, when you try to move it by lifting the litter box from the handle at the top.The photo of this product on Amazon only shows 2 clips for some reason (1 clip each side) - but there are actually 4 clips (2 each side). If you look closely, you should be able to see embossed padlocks where the clips are attached on each side of the hood - these indicate locked or unlocked, but they are not easy to see. So, before you connect the lid to the tray (with the door flap facing you), you need to ensure the clips are forward (unlocked position), then once the hood is attached properly, push the clips away from you into the locked position. You do need to check the clips are as far back as possible, otherwise the hood will come apart from the base when you try and lift it from the handle at the top.CARBON FILTER - The tiger design at the top of the hood is where the carbon filter is inserted. The first filter is already included, but these do need to be replaced regularly to help eliminate odor - they cost approx £4 for a pack of 2. The filter does seem to contain the cat odor, providing the door flap is down. Some of the reviews indicate that the carbon filter is of a poor design, as the filter is exposed, and their cat(s) can get to it easily and shred it. One of my cats was scratching the filter, so I sprayed it with a little bit of 'Feliway Cat Calming Spray' and he's now stopped. The spray is quite expensive (approx £8 for 20ml). However, I've used it for other purposes; for example, on the cats' bedding when I went to collect them, then again for their first trip to the vets - they were remarkably calm! I've also used the spray on furniture and carpets around the home to help settle them in and stop any scratching of furniture.TRANSPARENT DOOR FLAP - Measuring approx (W) 21-25cm (slightly wider at the top) by (H) 26cm; this is great for larger cats. The door flap is attached to the carbon filter at the top of the hood, so it can be folded up and back onto the actual hood if your cat isn't used to using a cat flap. Alternatively, the door can be removed completely, providing you are very careful; by pulling the plastic catch away from the bit where the door flap is inserted into the catch. Once your cat is comfortable using its litter box, you can then try him or her with the door flap down. He/she may need encouraging by putting something under the door flap to wedge it up/slightly open at first, and then gradually lowering it until the door flap is completely down. Some reviews indicate issues with the door sticking. I've noticed it can be problematic if the top part (the tiger design with the carbon filter) isn't properly in place - it's easily fixed by re-aligning both sides (pushing it down from the top). If you have a small cat, you may find it takes him or her a little bit of time to get used to the door flap. Also, the door is quite noisy when it flaps back into position, so this may scare some cats at first. If this happens, I would recommend following the steps above until the door is fully down and your cat is used to the noise.LITTER TRAY (Bottom section) - This is very deep and requires a lot of litter. The tray is approx 15cm high and deeper at the back. My cats seem to like to dig deep and flick litter everywhere, so I fill the tray to approx 6-8cm. You may be able to get away with less cat litter, but it will depend on your cat(s), the litter you use and frequency of cleaning the litter tray. I have 2 neutered boys and they appear to be fairly clean, but I understand from some reviews, that some cats urinate against the side, and the urine leaks out onto the floor - the reason for leakage appears to happen as there is no overlap between the lid and tray.LITTER BAGS - I wasn't able to find any litter bags/liners that fit this litter box. I posted a question on Amazon but didn't get any helpful responses. With these being my first cats, I was concerned about cleaning the tray out, but it is relatively easy, although again, it will depend on which cat litter you use and whether your cats are messy or not.CAT LITTER - very few people talk about which cat litter they use with this 'Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Pan'. Firstly, I now know there are important factors to consider with cat litter choice. These factors are cost, wastage, clumping vs non-clumping, environmentally friendly, hygienic, eliminates odor, time and ease of cleaning, and finally trailing from the litter tray. I'm sure there are many other things to consider.I had planned to use Pettex Pampuss Woodbase, as I understand it's more environmentally friendly than other products, but I was discouraged from using it due to the volume required for this 'Jumbo Catit Litter Box' and possible wastage - apparently the pellets crumble and turn into sawdust, so you either have to sieve it regularly after use to separate the sawdust and pellets for re-use, or throw the entire litter and sawdust away and re-fill the tray with new litter. My understanding is that, due to the size of the tray, this product will either be time consuming and quite dusty when separating the pellets from the sawdust, or it will work out quite expensive if refilling the tray each time. It does however, have great reviews, so please do not be discouraged. At the end of the day it's down to individual choice.I was advised to use Catsan hygiene (granules) non-clumping, as it is apparently one of the better litters for eliminating odor. I understand this is one of the preferred cat litters on the market. I've found it gets quite smelly the more it is used as urine is absorbed into the granules. It may just be me, and take a little bit of time to get used to as these are my first cats. What I have found with this litter is, if your cat urinates in the same place all the time, the granules become less absorbent, and the urine collects at the bottom of the tray - making it smelly (and after time, stains the bottom of the tray). To give you an idea of the amount of Catsan litter I used to fill the tray to approx 6cm deep was 10L.I've researched other litters extensively, and I'm going to try Cat's Best Öko Plus next. From the reviews on Amazon (over 300), it appears to to have many advantages. It seems, that whilst it appears more expensive, it will save you more money in the long run - especially if you have more than one cat. It's eco friendly as you only need to completely fill the litter tray once and add litter - apparently it clumps around the cat waste so you only remove the litter where the cats have been (no wastage); its biodegradable and can be flushed down the toilet; it's hygienic; and last of all, it holds odor well. The only negative I could really see was that it treads more than other litters do, and can end up around the house.*UPDATE ON CAT LITTER*I'm now using 2 Catit Jumbo litter boxes and have switched over to Cat's Best Öko Plus litter. Lots of positives: it eliminates urine odor (my cats don't bury their poo so that can smell a little); its environmentally friendly; it clumps around their wee so you can just scoop it out and flush it down the toilet; it's more cost effective as you only scoop out the litter around the pet waste. Providing the litter is 6-8 cm deep you only need to keep topping up, then every 2-3 weeks clean the box out completely. At this point I like to replenish the litter boxes with new litter, so I will let the litter run low so I'm not throwing too much away. You could however, re-use the litter and mix in new litter as it doesn't smell. Only one negative: the litter trails everywhere - even with a Jumbo Easyology cat litter mat. I just keep a cord free Hoover nearby so I can hoover each time I scoop out. With regard to scooping out the litter, I keep a small container and scoop next to my litter boxes, so I can transfer the litter into the container inside the box then flush it straight down the toilet.CLEANING - Removal of pet wasteThe front door flap and carbon filter lift up and over for easy access of removing soiled letter.CLEANING - Complete cleanThe connecting 4 clips unlock the hood from the base to allow the litter to be pored out of the litter tray into a bag.Cleaning the tray is fairly easy for me as I have an outdoor tap to get rid of the worst and rinse the tray out (you could always use a bucket of water or a watering can). I have purchased 'Savic Refresh'r Cleaning Spray' which really does leave the tray and room smelling nice and fresh (approx £4). It's an antibacterial household spray which is safe to use on pet products, and, in addition, can be used for to remove stains and urine odor (I've not needed to use it on stains yet). Bought this haven't bought three others off Amazon prior to it, the 'magical self cleaning litter tray', the 'musical relaxing tray', the 'fashion show tray' and so on. I am easily swayed by ads you see. In the case of every 'sophisticated' tray, I encountered problems that turned it into a sophisticated mess... So we needed to go back to basics of litter tray: BIG, EASY to CLEAN, LOOKS GOOD, ADEQUATE WEIGHT AND SHAPE. Guess what?! This is it. The mother of all litter trays. My white black female house cat (small-medium depending on food intake) and ginger boy cat (medium-large depending on food intake... mostly large) tried it out together when we first got it. Seeing as they had been fighting over territory, it was the closest I had seen them stand in days!! So arguably this tray is encouraging cat camaraderie... Seriously however, it is large enough, wide enough and tall enough to fit two cats in at once. Which means that it's big enough for a large cat to fit comfortably and turn around as they cover up their business. You could put plenty of litter in it which cats clearly adore, but because of how easy it is to clean, you really don't have to change the litter that often! It's actually a money saving litter tray! The material it's made from and the way its is shaped, allows the litter clumps to be scooped off easily and without mess, even if they are slightly stuck to the bottom or sides of the tray. When it's time to change the litter, we usually empty the whole lot out, clean it with warm water/soap and a cloth, dry it and replace with new litter. It's really easy quick and simple to do. The design is solid, no part of it will break easily. The cover is very easy to remove, and even though it is white, so can get dirty quickly with paw prints, it's very simple and easy to clean with a cloth.
