When the focusing ring is forward in the AF position, it is not engaged to any of the internal focus gearing and will turn freely. Without the added weight of the metal ring the camera can auto focus the lens more quickly and smoothly.For manual focus, simply rotate the focus ring all the way to one side or the other on the focus travel, either infinity or it's closest focusing distance, then pull back (towards the mount plate) on the manual focus ring. While pulling back, rotate the ring from one side of the focus travel to the other. I would like to use it foe portraits.** A: This is a beautiful lens, and works just fine on a Nikon D7100. Good for portraits and macro. Full frame lenses are fine on a smaller sensor; DX lenses will work on a full frame but there will be loss of coverage. Remember crop factor of 1.5 - same field of view - although not really magnification - as a 150mm lens. **Q: I have noticed that this lens is not provided with an image stabilizer. Is not this an impediment? Is not it hard to use? Thanks for your suggestion** A: I mainly use this lens for macro and portraiture with off camera flash and a tripod so the lack of image stabilization is not important. The image quality is superb. Had it quite a while now and very happy with the results and quality. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Brilliant! *by B***W on 24 March 2013* As sharp (or sharper) than the Nikon 105mm and only half the price.It takes great photos of flowers and insects and also would be great for a fixed focus portrait lens or for landscapes (use your feet to zoom!).This is my second Tokina AT-X Pro series lens (the other is the 11-16 superwide) and they both perform superbly and are real bargains. I love my Nikon DSLR bodies but the lenses are a bit pricey. These are much more affordable with no loss of quality. What's not to like? ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Impressed *by S***S on 12 August 2017* After a long look at Tokina,Tamron,Sigma (can't afford the Nikkor) I decided on the Tokina. I was a bit unsure about the clutch focusing system but thought I'd give it a go, and I'm so glad I did ! It's a dream to use ! The lens feels so balanced on my D7200, it handles perfectly. The picture quality is excellent, razor sharp.
