One hell of a ride
My teacher recommended this film to me and I skeptically rented it. In hindsight, I'm glad I did. From the little of the crime genre I've watched, it seemed it didn't really appeal to me but this film may have changed my perception entirely. The opening scene alone was a pleasant surprise. I've grown accustomed to crime films being depressing so it was a welcome change to see such a charming conversation. First of all, I would like to emphasise how great the performances by the two leads are. I have never even heard of Warren Beatty or Faye Dunaway until the Oscars mixup but now I want to watch more of their work, especially Warren Beatty. What struck me first was just how attractive he was. This might sound irrelevant but when you consider it from the perspective of Bonnie, it makes complete sense. Here is this dashing young man who is the epitome of youth, who wouldn't want to run of with him? But what struck me more was just how charming his performance is. His smile makes you excuse his actions. For this film to work, the leads have to be likeable and both nail it. Never once did I want Bonnie and Clyde to get caught even when they were shooting cops black and blue. What makes this film so great, is just how well - balanced everything is. There is just enough focus on Bonnie and Clyde that you feel compassion for them but never too much that the pacing gets slow. There film strikes the right balance between character development and action which helps move it along nicely. What really impresses me about this film is how well it holds up. Considering it is from 1967, you would assume it looks dated but the mise en scene was wonderful. I loved the countryside setting, it added a natural element to the film.Given that this is from 1967, there are some issues with it. In the opening scene, there is a reference to homosexuality which I don't particularly agree with but was probably a commonly held belief at the time. As far as how women are treated, I must say I appreciate the lack of nudity. Bonnie is actually given some agency in the sense that she fires guns and actively takes part in the action. Also, her relationship with Clyde could have easily been over - sentimental but I liked how Clyde says that he isn't a lover boy because it allows their relationship to foster naturally rather than be rushed. Their relationship also feels genuine because they really seem to understand each other. In the opening scene you get a sense that Clyde sees a lot of himself in Bonnie which is why he goes out of his way to convince her to come with him. He is very perceptive because he can easily see that she is wasting her potential as a waitress without her explaining much. Not to mention there also some subtle moments which I find quite heartfelt. Like when they make love for the first time and Clyde essentially asks if he is any good. For all his macho posturing,Clyde is lonely which is what connects him with Bonnie. One of the best things about the film is that it made me root for Bonnie and Clyde. I knew the ending was coming and when it happened, I was actually sad which is a testament to the performances of Beatty and Dunaway. Also, this film has a sense of fun and adventure which I feel is lacking from other crime films. When I think about it, the reason I didn't connect to other crime films is because they feel the need to be overly - serious to the point that you can't enjoy the ride but Bonnie and Clyde embraces the fun right from the word go.On the whole, I highly recommend this film to everyone (especially film students). Whatever assumptions you may have about crime films or even older films, just remember to take a chance because I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.

Still a Top Watch - but get the Bluray Version
This film is getting on for 50 years old now but still holds up well today. It caused a real stir when it came out in 1967 due to several violent scenes but from there on things became more and more graphic and the floodgates were open. The acting from all concerned is top class, the film won all the top awards, nominations were flying in all directions. The film’s budget of $2.5 million was turned into a worldwide profit of $70 million.I bought the ordinary DVD and I have to say that the quality of picture is poor – I wished I’d bought the Bluray version as this film is top notch.Beatty & Dunaway have starred in many top films but I think it’s true to say that they both fell short of reaching the very top.Like any film, this one takes a few liberties with the story lines but overall it contains most of the known facts. It's a first class watch and every bit as good, as I recall it from all those years ago.

Lower resolution BD
Just on image quality ...This disc plays in the VC-1 format at 15 MBS on average, this results in a lower resolution image; noticeable higher resolution is experienced with the AVC format playing at 25 MBPS as used in " Laurene of Arabia " for instance, especially for distant landscapes. Mind you, you would not notice the difference with a "domestic" flat screen TV, especially since there are so many close-ups, but you do when projecting on a large screen with a top of the range HD projector, well tuned and focussed. It's a long time since seen the film in the late 60s, but I feel that the images have been cropped to suit the TV format philosophy requirement ie the use of many extreme close-ups; by that I mean not only cropping top and bottom of the pictures to suit the 16.9 format, but also the sides, to concentrate on the centre of the frames. That's why I gave this BD three stars,But an interesting, atmospheric film to watch all the same.

I'M BONNIE PARKER AND THIS IS CLYDE BARROW -- WE ROB BANKS.
Magnificent film. Gripping from start to finish (especially the finish) say no more! Wonderful 1930's USA crime with all the 1930's cars to match. Boyfriend/Girlfriend bored with life go on the rampage with their personal introduction, i.e. "We rob Banks". Warren Beatty/Fay Dunaway both give stunning performances as do remainder of the cast. Best character in my book has to be "C.W. MOSS." Loyal to the Bank-robbing cause and first class car repairer as they gradually get wrecked!! As I said earlier the final scene will stun you; in 1967 it must have left audiences gasping; would be more acceptable now no doubt. If you haven't seen this film then you haven't lived as they say. Buy it now, sit back and be entertained beyond words.
