Comfy, amazing build, does the job
The AKG Y50 comes with a very high expectation, so naturally they were destined to disappoint, and yes I was expecting an audio revelation. More than one expert review said these are comparable to headphones at twice the price, so when tested at £80 by reviewers, these should sound like £81-160 headphones (though I got them for less). So, I shortlisted Sennheiser, Beats, Philips, and Audio Technica, but reviews kept steering me to AKG. At the budget end, What Hifi best buy headphones under £50 were also looking good, the Panasonic RPHTX7. While I prefer the WW2 radio operator style of the Panasonic, the black AKG Y50 looked like it belonged to an assassin. And every material on this is soft to touch (black version). Even the cable is soft, let alone the ear pads which are sublime; the matt finish on all surfaces makes them look like stealth headphones. So, I borrowed my daughter's Panasonic RPHTX7 to do a sound comparison (£40 headphones versus £80), and swapped between those and my new Y50s while listening to Mussorgsky 'Night on Bare Mountain' on vinyl. The Panasonic sounded great, loud, and boomy, very clear, difficult to beat, and sometimes available at £22, amazing value. But then the AKG showed me something quite different, very comfortable, the sound was less harsh, less muddled, and very very good. Neutral, inoffensive, tight bass, well controlled throughout. It almost steers you through individual notes with ease, it tames recordings. So this is what £80-160 headphones should sound like, I thought. Smooth, and comfy. Are you looking for boomy harsh sound, then AKG will disappoint you, but reproducing music and vocals, AKG hits the sweet spot. Only one query, they're quiet, and so the volume needs to be turned up to actually hear the detail in the music, just remember to turn it down when you unplug the headphones! Compared to reviews for other quality cans, £80 Grados are unbeatable for sound, but less comfortable. £120 Sennheiser Monitors are simply gorgeous, but in a different price bracket (these were my first choice). Audio Technicas are apparently bass heavy (but respect the heritage and make great styli), and lastly Beats, which are the most trendy, but pricey and bass heavy (apparently). So for £80, the AKGs seem to do everything, batsman, bowler and fielder; sensible, practical, no weaknesses, well behaved, a little radical in appearance (if you opt for non-black), easy to live with, a labrador with a spiky collar? 5 stars.

High end sound
Bought these on offer. I own the Yamaha HPH-200's, the Yamaha Pro 400's and the AKG K551's, so that is my comparison level. I also have listened to various Grado Headphones. I have always been a sucker for a good offer and have been fortunate to buy my headphones on a good review/price basis. I have not been able to test out most headphones as they are just not available to demo. Hence I have looked for great reviews and special offers and I have been lucky. When I saw the AKG Y50's on an exceptional offer my heart ruled my head and I pressed the button. As I was not going to wear these outdoors I bought the yellow pair. The branding is extremely overstated but for me it does not matter. I want comfort and sound quality. The headphone is a mixture of aluminium and plastic and feels very nice to the touch. The can covers are aluminium and the head band is metallic too. Not cheap materials at all. The pads are covered with what seems to be leather on memory foam, but may be a leather substitute. They are firm yet gentle on the ear, the soft memory foam softening everything. The longest I have worn them for is about two hours and the idea of discomfort has just not arisen. They come with an in line remote control which I have no intention of using. Importantly the right headphone supports a 2.5 mm to 3.5mm detachable cable, and as long as you buy a small 3.5mm female to 2.5mm male adapter (on amazon or eBay) you can upgrade the cable. As I put these cans to my ears I got a shock. They sounded high end. Not in relation to price but in absolute terms. Many including AKG themselves have stated the bass end is extended, but what is not mentioned is that it is in perfect balance with the mids and highs. Although these are not studio monitors they are tonally and musically exceptional. Whether it's bass reliant music such as Bob Marley, Sade and Gorgon City, or Tchaikovsky's string quartets these headphones pitch them beautifully. Guitars on Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits and Pink Floyd sound natural and as they should do. Ed Sheeran's "Sing" sounds big. Bob Dylan, Fairport Convention and Bert Jansch are imbued with heart and meaning. The sound-stage is not extreme in width but is deeper than most, giving the sense of in the room experience and the sheer musicality and organic quality of the offering draws one in to a very personal and intimate experience. I have tried a few cables and although the supplied cable is very good, my short Yamaha cable is definitely the best with this headphone. Of course sound is very personal so all of this is IMHO. Some reviewers here give poor reviews. Maybe they have rogue quality earphones that escaped the quality control, maybe they have a Chinese copy or maybe they just don't like the AKG Y50's, but the AKG Y50's are exceptional to my ear. So 5*'s from What HiFi and 5*'s from me. Update These headphones do not, de facto, drive easily from mobile phones. I use them with a Fiio X1 dedicated DAP and a Fiio E11 Kilimanjaro headphone amp. The sound from the headphones in this system is exceptional. Running the AKG Y50's through my Sony Z3 Android phone does not create enough power, and volume is limited. Most headphones cannot give their best performance directly from a phone. Iphone users may get a lttle more volume but not a lot. A small headphone amp can make a lot of difference.

Great headphones - shame they broke so quickly
Pros: These have been my first pair of wireless headphones and they are really simple to use. I've had no problems with connecting them to devices and I like the fact that they can also be plugged in if I want to save battery. The battery life is excellent; I didn't even charge them when they arrived and they still lasted well over a week, with an average weekly usage of around 10 hours. The sound quality is great, nice and clear and more bass-heavy than my previous headphones (Monster DNA On-Ear Headphones). Sound leakage seems to be low; I'm fairly comfortable using them on the train, although I do still restrain myself a little with regards to the volume. In terms of noise cancellation, these do a fairly decent job. Definitely better than my previous headphones; however, if you're really looking to block out all sounds these may not be for you. Cons: The left ear cup detached after less than 3 weeks. I've seen a couple of other reviews stating the same thing, so I don't know if there is just a flaw with the swivel design. I took great care of them, so I was obviously disappointed. I thought about getting different ones; however, it had taken me a long time to pick a pair in the first place and I was pretty happy with them in every other way so I decided to just get a replacement. This was straightforward as I was still within the returns period. I've had them for a couple of weeks so far and I'm trying to leave them unfolded as much as possible, in the hope that it may help to prevent them breaking again. I would also say that I have quite a small head and these only just fit - when I have the adjustable band on the highest setting they still sit a little lower on my ears than I would ideally like. However, this isn't a problem in terms of them staying on my ears or in terms of sound and I soon got used to it. Finally, they aren't the most comfortable headphones I've had. I'm definitely getting more used to them as time goes on, but in the beginning my ears would start to feel sore after only around half an hour. Overall, I would recommend these headphones as they offer great sound at a very reasonable price. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that my second pair are more durable than my first!

"Don't Just Listen To Music - Feel It! Love It!
I have been looking for some headphones for a while now. I have had many recommendations and I suspect all them are good but as they weren't the most essential purchase, I decided to wait and afford myself the luxury of research before committing to a purchase. After trawling through copious amounts of online literature and product reviews, one brand name was consistently mentioned in Top 10 lists - AKG. So I focussed my research on this brand, visiting their website and generally exploring independent reviews and reviews from purchasers of this brand. I did not want to take out a second mortgage in order to buy a pair of headphones and so having set a budget of £100, I looked at what was available. To my surprise Amazon were selling the AKG Y50BT for under £100 (some have them advertised at £149.99). Having researched this specific product I was somewhat overwhelmed by all of the positive feedback these had received. Many describing the audio quality comparable with headphones in the price range of £300 - £400. These arrived ahead of the scheduled delivery date. Upon opening them, I was impressed by the presentation. A box that beautifully displays them and makes them look like a quality purchase. In the box is a branded AKG soft carry bag, a USB charging cable, a 3.5mm jack with a 1.2m cable length (for when the bluetooth functionality runs low on battery) or as AKG describe it a "Detachable By-Pass Cable" and paperwork. I immediately tried them. I opted for the black version, as this doesn't make the branded ear cups too stand out and obvious. The first thing you notice is that they are beautifully designed. A wonderful padded soft cushion ear cup. Each ear cup is defined by the letter 'R' or 'L'. to remove any confusion as to which cup fits which ear! The controls are easy to reach on the right ear pad. A good weight (245g). Good in the sense that you are aware your wearing them but not irritated by their weight and the padded ear cups and headband make them wearable for an age without irritation. The controls are located on the right ear cup, this may be the only irritating thing about them as the buttons are small and a little fiddly especially until you get use to them and what they're capable of doing. The USB micro charging port is on the left ear cup. It's good to know that the headphones are ready to use from the box. The bluetooth pairing was remarkably simple initially with the iPhone and then when paired with the iMac. A small blue light is displayed when the bluetooth function is on and a beep sound can also be heard. When charging a red light is displayed until the battery is fully charged. The battery when fully charged lasts up to 20 hours. The bluetooth functionality delivers on range too. I tested these earphones around the house, including upstairs and there was no loss of quality or any interference to the sound. Whilst there are controls on the ear cup, the headphones are also fully controlled from the phone or the keyboard. The branding on the box says 'Don't Listen To Music - Feel It' and I have to agree. These make the listening experience beautiful and inclusive. Each voice, each instrument is sumptuously reproduced in each ear. They are perfectly designed to limit any extraneous noise. In truth, having never really needed a pair of headphones before, I now can't understand why I didn't give in earlier to owning a pair but then I may have never bought these. With these headphones I won't just listen to music, I'll feel it and fall in love all over again with the pleasure of hearing music as it should be heard - beautifully.

Maybe the best headphones under £50
Excellent headphones for the price; easy to drive, fairly transparent, comfortable, and well built. I own more than a few pairs of headphones, but have struggled to find a good pair for the commute. The AKG Y50s have, so far, proved to be the perfect fit. For the price, they're an excellent pair of cans. The sound is very good; far better than anything else I've come across in the price range. They're pretty well balanced, though if I were to level any negative upon the sound it would be that they tend to be a little bass-heavy. Things can get slightly boomy and bloated at the low end in certain tracks, but other than this (which I'm more than aware will be a bonus to some!) they have excellent response across the spectrum. They're comfortable to wear—the soft pads sit well on the ear and don't grip too hard, nor slip off when moving the head. Even after an hour or so they don't cause excess heat, despite being covered in pleather as opposed to a velour as may be found on higher-priced sets. For under £50 I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better pair of on-ear phones.

Great looks and even better sound - style AND substance!
First off, this is a review of the Y50 - not the wireless version. Like so many people tend to do I spent ages trying to decide what headphones to buy. After reading almost countless good reviews about the Y50s on Amazon and in the press, I decided I had to give them a try. I was a little concerned as I've always tended to go for the more discreet approach with in-ear headphones, not a fan of the Beats 'style over substance' culture so for my over-ear headphones are something I'd use at home instead. I have a pair of Sennheiser 515HDs at home but these are open-back so would be no good for commuting, etc. The problem is that I've got a bit of hearing damage from years of gigging that means IEMs tend to be difficult to wear for me these days. Hence the reason for trying some on-ear headphones for a change. For starters the styling and build quality of the headphones really is very good. I went for Teal and they really are very nice to look at - a bold design for sure but done with such panache that it doesn't matter a jot. And if you don't like the bright colours then the black version is much more subtle. I've not been a fan of on-ear headphones previously but the memory foam pads on the Y50s are really comfy to wear and provide a decent amount of noise cancellation. Not completely but they do cut down the ambient noise levels a noticeable amount, which is a nice bonus. The earcups can also rotate and fold inwards for storage - they're still not the smallest on-ear headphones you'll find but it does help quite a bit and putting the headphones away in a bag or pocket. The cable includes a good quality built-in mic that provides crisp sound for calls. What I really love though is that the cable is detachable. I had tried some Shure IEMs with detachable cables that failed after 48 hours but a good few weeks in this cable is still going strong - with a snug, tight fit and a lovely soft finish. Detaching the cable means you can store it much more neatly when not using the headphones without getting any annoying tangles and more importantly without damaging them. Really great. Last but not least, the headphones come with a nice quality, AKG-branded carry pouch and a good quality 35mm > 1/4" adaptor - especially useful for me as I play guitar, and most recording desks / preamps need a 1/4" cable. In terms of sound quality, I have to say I've been really impressed with the Y50s. I'd been around plenty of shops testing every pair of headphones I could find and these ones definitely punch above their weight, easily competing with more expensive headphones. Now, I won't get carried away - it's not going to beat headphones costing £100+ or even those massively overpriced Beats. But it's nicely detailed sound that balances well across the tonal spectrum. There's added punch to the bass but not so much that the sound becomes to boomy or muddy - there's still a decent level of mids for depth and the high end is detailed without being too harsh. There's character in abundance whilst still being very balanced - I really can't ask for more at this price and certainly tried several more expensive brands that didn't impress me nearly as much. As others have stated they do need a bit of driving - they're not the loudest cans in the world but they've had enough volume on my smartphone to cope with busy trains and walking around in central London, which is exactly what I wanted them to be able to do. So far so good! I do have two complaints though, both of them being relatively minor build quality issues. The first is that the headband at the top doesn't have an awful lot of padding - this makes for a nice minimal design but some might find it a tad uncomfortable when worn for hours at a time. The second thing is another that other reviewers have pointed out - these headphones do leak a bit of sound. It's not too bad, but if you're riding on the quiet coach on the train, sat next to someone sleeping on a plane or plan on listening in bed etc then you'll have to keep the volume down a little or consider something with better noise isolation. Overall though I really couldn't be happier with these headphones. They suit my requirements perfectly, mixing style with substance and providing a punchy, versatile, detailed sound that works superbly for everything I need it to. This is a classy pair of headphones that prove excellent value for money and should last well thanks to an impressive level of build quality.

Sonically excellent, but rather uncomfortable for extended use
Quite frankly, they are uncomfortable for extended sessions which is a shame, I can do an hour or so with them, but then they do start to hurt, particularly the cartilage on the Pinna(Google "parts of ear") becomes stressed to the extent that I have to reposition the pads in such a way that interferes with the transference of sound. I have average sized ears, there's nothing in particular about them that is remarkable, so I can only imagine this might be a problem for many listeners. By comparison, I have a pair of Sennheiser RS180s, which are over ear headphones and which I can wear for many hours without complaint. I can't fault the build quality in itself, they are solidly made and have a premium feel to them, but I do feel that perhaps there has been more of an emphasis on form over function and practicality. Sonically, they are excellent, the bass manages to remain very tight even at low frequencies, I wouldn't describe them as having a warm sound however, the RS180s sound much warmer, but this is a matter of preference rather than an objective assessment of sound quality and I have found these headphones to be easily on par with the RS180s in an objective sense. The mid range is balanced and well presented, without a trace of resonance and the high frequencies similarly are well defined and afforded plenty of space to provide clarity. Overall, these headphones present a sound stage that is genuinely enjoyable to to listen to. One perhaps less obvious observation is the low volume cut out, which I find can be a little aggressive when listening to delicate music, or the kinds of cinematic scores that accompany movies and this can be irritating, but it's not so intrusive as to lose itself a star, it will depend largely on what you intend to use them for. Bluetooth connection was flawless and indeed has been operating flawlessly since connection was initially established. Range is perhaps exactly where I would expect it to be for BT technology. These headphones manage to transmit a good 5 metres or a touch more without a problem and can manage obstruction fairly well, although throw more than 1 wall in the way and the connection does start to stutter. Connection quality of course, does depend on which dongle or transmitter you intend to use and owing to the inherent limitation of BT technology, will vary widely depending on your listening environment. I experienced little to no perceivable delay or sync problems using these headphones, which is as it should be at this price point. So, sonically great, easy to use, but unfortunately, too much emphasis on looks has created a premium product that is uncomfortable to wear.

Amazing sound quality for the price. Solid battery. Confortable for being on-ear. Price/quality ratio is top.
I usually do a lot of research before spending any money in tech, so I bought the Y50BT based on many positive reviews. After one week of continuous use, I can't be happier. The main characteristic is sound quality. It's better, for my taste, than any Bose pair i've tried, including the QC25/35, close to some sennheiser momentum that more than double the price of this set. Good bass, without enhancing it artificially. Middle and high tones are crips and clear. If you are a bass lover you might prefer other models, but if your consumer many music genders like me it's very well balanced for that. The battery lasted 6 days of good use (>5h/day). That surpassed my expectations and also the 20h that AKG says on paper, perhaps because I don't usually listen over 30/40% of volume. I'm quite picky with my ears and I can endure long sessions of working only feeling some small discomfort after 3/4 hours non stop. It cannot match the confort of an over-ear pair, but they are extremely confortable for an on-ear model. Perhaps a bit slippy if you shake your head strongly, not well suited for jogging with them, but if they were more tight they would be uncomfortable for regular use, so I'm happy with that decision. Noise isolation is good, but not off the chats. One detail that might annoy me a bit is that in fold positions the ON button can be pressed by accidente very easily, turning them on while in your bag. The box is not a fancy premium looking one, and the carrier bag is just correct. All the money you pay goes to the headphones, but the result is outstanding for a pair that barely surpasses the £100 barrier.

Vergleich: Teufel Massive, JBL E45BT, Beats by Dr. Dre EP, AKG Y50 BT
Beats by Dr. Dre EP Cooler, schlichter Kopfhörer. Gute Optik, sitzt relativ fest. Hallo?

A me va bene così.
