Q: i want to get this for mobile detail but with my business, i only use about 7 gallons of water to wash a car. Can this possibly contain that amount?

A little geometry shows that the medium size can hold 86.961039 gallons of liquid assuming it's 1 inch deep on a perfectly flat surface. Whether or not it can hold that much in practice is another matter, but I think it's safe to say it will easily hold 7 gallons.

Q: what is the thickness of the material?

It's described as an 18oz woven PCB fabric - the thickness is not given in mills. Closest thing it resembles in thickness that I can describe is like a really heavy duty grill cover. I've had it 3 months - no sign of wear and works great at keeping rain and snow water contained in my garage.

Q: The compact mat (the only one that fits my garage) is 3 inches shorter than the length of my car. Will the mat do the job for collecting melting snow?

Not sure. It should get most of it like the snow that collects in your wheel wells and underbody. Obviously whatever snow on the part of the car not covered by the mat will hit the floor. Can you get the bigger size and just have it fold up a little way on the wall in front of your car in the garage to make sure it covers everything? Just be careful that where the mat folds that it doesn't allow water to leak out.
