Decent pen for the price
This is a decent fountain pen for the price, however I'm editing this review after trying more than one. I had a box of them and though my first one wrote well, I had trouble with all of the others. I'd say this is a fine pen to try out, however it could turn you away from fountain pens if you have my experience, and if like me you don't prefer the Platinum ink which I find to be too watery. I can feel this pen drag on the paper, and I love a smooth writing experience with smooth ink. I'd recommend a Lamy Safari for a smooth writing experience or even the Maped student fountain pen.

Smooth writer, affordable & practical starter pen!
After trying out the Pilot Varsity fountain pen and being a little disappointed with it's performance, I decided to try out this Platinum Preppy pen (also available in Blue , Red , Yellow and Black )As I had mentioned in my previous review, my primary reason to use a fountain pen over a ball/roller point is the smoothness offered. Having used this pen for a few weeks I can list out the following based on my experience:(1) Nib/writing: This is one of the smoothest pens I've used, especially considering it's price point. The ink flow is consistent and the pens glides over almost any type of paper! It's way smoother than the Pilot Varsity I had reviewed earlier; I also happened to try a Lamy Safari and found this smoother at about a fourth of the cost.(2) Weight: like the Pilot Varsity this pen is very light, this may or may not be an advantage, it was good for me since I plan on carrying this pen with me at all times.(3) Price: the price is right, as a pen I hope to carry around often I won't feel bad if I lose or permanently 'lend' it to someone.(4) Ink: the flows smoothly and does well on most ordinary paper.(5) Durability: although mine has not cracked yet the transparent plastic is very brittle and could crack easily, the pen cap is already loose on mine. Some have suggested wrapping the bottom of the cap in a layer Scotch tape before the cracks develop to help prevent it.(6) Availability: this pen is hard to find locally and you almost certainly have to order it online which adds to the cost(7) Refills: you can buy cartridges but these can be very expensive if you regularly use your pen. Apparently Platinum also makes a converter for this pen but it's not easy to come by and ordering it online costs more than this pen! Another option is to buying a bottle of ink and use a blunt syringe to refill the cartridge which came with your pen.If you are new to writing with a fountain pen I highly recommend getting one of these before you splurge in a more expensive one, those may be more durable but not necessarily write better than this one. This is definitely going to be my (almost) disposable fountain pen of choice!
