The Pioppi Diet: The 21-Day Anti-Diabetes Lifestyle Plan as followed by Tom Watson, author of Downsizing : Malhotra, Dr Aseem, O'Neill, Donal: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Excellent, sensible diet book - Excellent, sensible healthy diet. Dr Aseem & Donal have fully explained from start to finish why we should be using this diet (over the years we have been given wrong advice on healthy eating) This diet is very easy to follow, inclusive of foods to buy, exercises and menu's. Having started this diet I have lost weight, haven't had cravings or snacks between meals as meals are fulfilling, eating healthy and enjoying every meal, will need a new wardrobe shortly, no going back to the old ways. This is the way forward the NHS would be saving money by providing everyone with this book. The best purchase I have every made. Review: Great guidelines to better life - I found this book really interesting. There is a lot of good advice on how to keep healthy and slow down the ageing process, taking into account not only the diet itself but the entire lifestyle. It made me to look into Tai Chi and I look forward to exploring this. Some of the recipes maybe useful and will use them as inspiration especially for curry (not very Mediterranean though!) Although I have no doubt that Mediterranean diet has got health benefits, I find it hard to believe that it is a low carb diet - at least I did not notice this on any of my visits to Italy! Yes, they do eat pasta as a starter but it isn't a small portion! And they do eat a lot of bread and pizza. Despite that I'm not convinced that this is how the Italians really live, I do like the concept of low carb diet with a lot of nuts, olive oil, limited sugar and processed food, so would definitely recommend this read.

I would rather listen to eminent people like Dr Aseem Malhotra than the diet industry machine
IF YOU DIET AND STRUGGLE, YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE: I purchased this book just over two weeks ago....I've read most of it and have started to apply the principles of it. As a lifelong yo-yo dieter, I've followed all the advice of the diet industry and have tried to have as much 0% fat things in my food allowance. I used to weigh everything, avoid hard cheese and full fat yogurts because we've all been taught to avoid saturated fats. Since having this book, I've lost 11lbs in less than 2 weeks so for me, that's evidence alone that we've all been severely misguided by the so called experts. Ive stopped weighing food, il just rip a piece of full fat cheese off if I want a snack, I eat a handful of nuts every day, I eat apples and loads of berries, mainly blueberries and raspberries with full fat Greek yogurt. I eat curries with chicken and loads of vegetables, salad with EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, I eat eggs and plenty of them. The only thing I'm not doing is eating fish as I'm not a fan of fish but I replace it with omega three fish oil. This for me has been life changing and, after being a VICTIM of the diet industry, this is THE way ahead. I would rather listen to eminent people like Dr Aseem Malhotra than the diet industry machine, who are all there just to make money from you staying overweight. ELEVEN POUNDS WEIGHT LOSS IN LESS THAN TWO WEEKS, you cannot argue with that and to sum up, all I can say is try it....your body will thank you for putting the fat back into it because it needs it to function properly. Worth a read, don't you think? X

Some interesting stuff but a bit flawed.
I was really excited by the idea of this book but the reality was a bit different. It is basically a keto diet book bolted on to anecdotal observations about the Pioppi villagers. The science of fat consumption, diet etc is easily digestible (no pun intended!) but probably overreaches a bit in its conclusions. But generally the background of the Pioppi people and medical opinion on fat is a really good read and makes up the first 147 pages or so. The next 50 pages or so makes up the diet plan and is pretty weak to be honest. Some of the recommendations fly in the face of what you have been told about the Pioppi people with some weird justifications. e.g. You should fast one day a week because some of the Pioppi people they chatted to used to go to work hungry due to food shortages when they were younger - no real evidence and a really odd way of bolting on a bit of the 5:2 diet. There's also a really sketchy section on mindful movement that again seems to be crowbarred in to fit. The other thing that didn't work for me was the narrative style. It's obviously based on a documentary made by the two writers. So, an awful lot of it is a description of what they did as part of the documentary which is quite weak and shallow in terms of the research. Lots of - we met a guy in a cafe and he told us this about his childhood in Pioppi so we'll draw a series of conclusions about our diet from that one encounter. Maybe a good framework for telly but feels like overreaching in a book. They also swap between narrators inconsistently in a confusing way. So, one minute you think you're getting the informed opinion of a heart surgeon only to find out halfway through the paragraph that the narrative voice has swapped at some point to the less well informed filmmaker - which makes for a jarring read. It really needed some better editing. The recipes aren't brilliant either. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the book and it inspired me to read more about the high fat/low carb diet. Since adopting what essentially amounts to a keto diet I've lost a stone in six weeks. So it got me kick/started in the right direction.

Bravo! Jorge García-Dihinx

This books deserves at least five stars. It is giving the best possible advice and is based on solid reseach. It is easy to understand the reasoning in the book.

This book is a very good eye opener to the dangers of seed oils and the promotion of processed food. Very simple suggestions and informative . An introductory book that shows the dangers of the current nutritional guidelines.

My story. When my doctor told me I was on the fence on becoming diabetic, I knew I had to do something about my weight. I ride my bike 8-10 miles per day, joined a popular weight loss program, but I still could not lose weight. I'm 67 years old and weighed 242 lbs. I was told to get on a Mediterranean diet and to get the Pioppi book. My doctor put on my arm a glucose monitor so I can see how certain foods will raise my blood sugar. Very useful I might add. The first thing I did was research the author of this book. He's a very prominent cardiologist in the UK and specializes in obesity. His book can be controversial, but after you read it he does make sense (no matter what others think). Dr. Malhotra talks about is how people are programed about the fats we consume and blames this mostly on the food industry. People will buy low fat yogurt thinking it's healthy, but never think about the added sugar added to yogurt. He stated some studies how people on a low fat diet will still get diabetes and have heart issues. He really focuses in on the sugars/carbs and insulin. Insulin basically controls our body. The first thing Dr. Malhotra suggests is stopping ALL sugars for two weeks. This includes pasta, rice, bread, and other carbs. After two weeks, he said the craving for sweets would be gone. In my case, he was correct. After two weeks I don't crave sweets, bread, rice, or pasta. After four weeks, my fasting glucose levels have dropped from 125 prior to to 102. The glucose monitor in my arm really validates the book when I see my average glucose levels going down. Also, I seem to be having more energy and I just feel so much better. Being on this Mediterranean diet and following what the book says, I have lost weight. I started at 242 lbs and after four weeks my weight has dropped to 235. It hasn't been that difficult either. A lot easier than the popular diet membership I had. You have to watch what carbs you eat. The book explains what foods to avoid and what foods to eat. He explains processed foods and how bad they are. I eat a lot of lean meat, eggs, and veggies. My cholesterol hasn't gone up. The main issue I've been having is trying to find the right foods to eat at a restaurant. Like most people I can't live on salads. However, I have been able to adjust my eating habits by avoiding the foods that will increase my glucose levels out of my designated range. You really need the desire to lose weight. This book gave me the desire to do so after reading it. My wife is doing the same eating plan as me. She too has lost weight and she doesn't even exercise as much as I do. I think the people who give the book poor reviews didn't read the entire book or didn't try to understand what the author was actually suggesting. They probably never tried to implement the book's recommendations on how to eat healthier. For me, I enjoyed reading a book that goes against what our mind has been programmed to believe.
