NASA Saturn V Manual 2016 (Haynes Manuals): 1967–1973 (Apollo 4 to Apollo 17 & Skylab) (Owners' Workshop Manual)

Superb book about an amazing machine
This is quite simply a superb, enthralling book about the most amazing machine ever made, and who better to write it than the person responsible for the Apollo Flight Journal, as complete an online source for the Apollo program (together with the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal by Eric Jones and Ken Glover) as you could ever want. I thought I knew a lot about the Saturn V, but I'm learning so much more from this book. Having witnessed a Space Shuttle launch from about as close as anyone is allowed to the launchpad, I could only imagine at the time what an incredible spectacle a Saturn V launch would have been. Like another reviewer said, its only real shortcoming is the lack of an index, but I'm forgiving it that because the rest of the book is so good. If you have any fascination for spaceflight and the historic Apollo program in particular, this book would be a valuable, dare I say vital addition to your library.

Useful if you have an old Saturn V lying around
Like all Haynes manuals this is also one. The Saturn V was a big pointy thing that shot men off to the moon and back. This is useful if you have a screw loose.

Still the Best rocket ever!
This book covered the whole history in good detail - lots of which I did not know, even listening to Appolo 11 live on Voice of America as South Africa had banned TV! Believe it or not..

Highly Recommended
It just dropped through my letter box a couple of hours ago. What an excellent book and a fine complement to the other Hayne's manuals covering the Apollo spacecraft. The book provides an excellent level of detail and fantastic coloured technical diagrams to help understand he workings of various systems. At last, well illustrated explanations of those bumps and holes on the outside of the three stages! The book finishes with a chapter on Skylab.I hope that it is a precursor to another Owner's Workshop Manual by the same author on Skylab.Just one request to Hayne's, could you please release the Owner's Workshop Manuals in electronic format as well!

Mighty Saturn 5 gets book it deserves
Once again another Haynes space manual worth its value. This manual focuses on Saturn 5 rocket that help propel Apollo to the Moon in late-1960's to early-1970's. Stuffed full of data covering all aspects of this mighty machine.Bonus is last chapter reviewing use of Saturn 5 as US first space station called Skylab, launched in 1973.This is a must for anyone interested in the Apollo programme & makes a good companion with other Haynes Apollo-related manuals like Apollo 11 & 13 in addition to manual on the Lunar Rover.

I never knew that!
Despite being a 'child of Apollo' and thus being something of a space nut this book paid attention to the sort of detail rarely found elsewhere and so much of it. Well written. Very informative.

A no-brainer purchase for Saturn V fans
As others have written, this is an excellent addition to the existing Haynes manuals that describe Apollo, Gemini, and other space vehicles and programs. It contains many diagrams and photos that I have not not seen used either on the web or in other publications, for example, there are shots of the interiors of the S-IC stage's fuel and LOX tanks, the application of thermal batting to the F-1 engines, and the components of the instrument unit. Besides the lack of an index, the main omission is a detailed discussion of the engine gimbal mechanisms on the first and second stages but this is a minor oversight. Overall, this book is excellent value for money and a must-have purchase for anyone with an interest in the mighty Saturn V.

superb manual
i have a dozen of these manuals from years gone by dealing with my cars / vans / jeeps / motorcycles ... they are all dog-eared and oil-stained - i guess this one will stay clean . This is a fantastic read , a stunning collection of information and diagrams with incredible photographs too . Haynes have done something amazing here as i now have six new manuals of theirs looking at different subjects ... all are fantastic and i hope to get the Moon manual for christmas ... superb books and some are so cheap it would be simply rude not to get them ... check out the range and prepare to be enthralled as i have been

An excellent book with one ironic thing
I grew up in the 1960's watching the space program. My imagination was captured by these massive vehicles, belching flame as they soared into the great darkness beyond the blue sky. This book is a wonderfully well-written, highly detailed account of the design, engineering and construction of the mighty Saturn V and all its variants. It goes into just enough detail without being boring, delivered in a lively, conversational style that will keep you turning the pages.I was just struck by one thing. In the chapter on the S-II, the second stage of the rocket, the author goes into detail about the problems faced insulating the liquid oxygen and hydrogen tanks, which needed to stay cold, of course. The North American engineers tried various methods, and then settled on a spray-on foam insulation - the author notes, 'It was a solution that was carried over to the external tank of the Space Shuttle.' What isn't mentioned, and might have been outside the scope of this book, is that same spray-on foam insulation directly led to the loss of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003. It's just one of those things - a successful engineering decision in the mid-1960's that led to disaster 40 years later. It does point up the value of taking a broad view of history and noting how small decisions can have unforeseen effects - no one in 1965 could have imagined this result.I don't know why this detail jumped out at me. It did not affect my enjoyment or appreciation for this book, which I highly recommend.
