Product description Before you start planning your awesome giant war robot battle-suit, or even just a friendly cybernetic house-bot to tidy your bedroom and do the washing-up for you, it might be better to start small and learn some of the basics. The Build Your Own Robot Arm is the perfect place to start.Anyone who wants a fascinating technical challenge can build their own remote controlled robot arm with this absorbing self-assembly kit. Although simple to construct, building the robot arm is a great way to learn more about basic robot technology and control systems. With five motors for multi-directional control of five different joints, the robot arm features base rotation, shoulder, elbow and wrist motion as well as a functional gripping claw. The gripping claw also has an integrated LED spotlight for extra illumination of anything that you are going to pick up.The five-way directional control allows the robot arm to grab, lift, position, lower and release items smoothly and efficiently.A wired remote controller gives the user complete control over all of these functions, and in addition to learning about robotic operation during the assembly process, manually controlling the arm is the perfect way to learn more about how machines work. So, start with this Build Your Own Robot Arm kit and who knows what youll be working on in the future! Maximum Lift is 100g. Box Contains Robot Arm kitRemote controlInstruction manual

fun to build
good fun to build ok but i think it says that it for 14+ that's ok as long as your 14 year hold has the patients to read the instructions carefully and really that go's for any one there or many parts (nuts screws gears and wiring that can be put in the wrong place ) put saying this if you follow the instruction and read over you will not have a problem INSTRUCTIONS or clear to under stand and when you come to build make sure that the peace's or clean from burse when you cut them out as it can give problems when assembling so clean up the edges. it touch me about 6 hours to build and have to say it was fun loved it .then the time came to power up and yes it worked fist time i just needed to make a few adjustmentsbut can i just say i don't think this will make a good toy for a young boy or girl really it's not a toy that will take much hammer its good not flimsy its more of a project to build and learn from but 5/5 it was a joy to build going to look for my next project have fun

Nice product, good value for money.
This little toy is awesome. My son loved it from the first minute and started to work on it immediately. It took him three hours to build it (he is 10), but he is used to play with this type of toys; I assume a beginner would need more time.Assembly: the product came with a pretty good instruction sheet, and the different types of screws are listed at 1:1 scale, so you can recognise it easier. Fitting the parts together could be a challenging job for children, but doable. The minus here is the fact that screws are quite difficult to tight them up; I had to do it for my son, and I got a blister by the time I finished the job. I would give 5 stars out of five for this section.Robustness: the product is pretty robust, with a very good grip, being able to hold and lift quite heavy stuff. The downside is the thin exposed wires. These wires can break easily; After a few days my son played with the robotic arm I had to open two of the engines to solder the wires back.3 out of 5 stars for this section.Overall impression: although the product is not a great deal of science, it still gives the impression of great achievement when assembly finished. Playing with it requires some skills, which again, is stimulative. However, if played hardly, will not last very long, as connections are not the most beautiful engineering design, but this reflects the price, I guess.Anyway, my son fell in love with this toy and really enjoyed working on it. Which is the most important thing, at the end of the day.

Really good as a parent/child educational exercise
Really good educational kit - about as good quality-wise as you'll get (at this price point). Learning not just about 'robots' but also how different types of gears work and simple electrical circuits.Took my 7 yr old about 3 hours to build with me alongside most of the time. My role was cutting pieces off the strue and tidying them up. Yes, lots of little pieces, and yes, lots of similar screws (check the machine screws vs self-tappers...) but exemplary instructions, especially the 'actual size' gauges for screws.Only demerit (apart from needing D cell batteries, which on reflection seem to be for ballast as much as power) is the 'what to do with it once built' question, as its grip is not very strong and it's non-programmable... but kids have much better imaginations for these things!

Satisfying to build and fun to use for older children and adults
This is interesting to build, and then fun to use afterwards. Building it requires concentration and is a challenge. If you struggle with Ikea furniture - forget about this thing! There are a lot of parts, some quite small, and you need to be careful to use the correct screws at each stage. Some screws are easily confused - for example there are 6mm screws and 7mm screws - you need a ruler to tell them apart! If buying this for children I would recommend helping them if they are likely to get frustrated or lose interest. And separate out all the metal screws into the different types before you start so that you don't (like I did) get half way through construction only to find used the wrong length pin in one of the motor cases and you have to take it apart again and undo all the motor boxes to see if you can find the one pin that you are missing, and then put it all back together again...The instructions are clear, although colour would have been better than black and white diagrams. But if you follow the diagrams carefully it fits together well. The only fault is that the battery compartment is tricky to get at if you want to change the batteries. You need 4 D cell batteries and these are not supplied.Once completed it works well and it's great fun to experiment to see what it can do, and all the different ways you can move it around.

Robot down.
This is the second one purchased after a wiring faults on motors I found that after spending a few hours building the basics of this and getting two motors fitted and ready to assemble the arm once again motor wires detached rendering the robot inoperable. I feel that this product falls short of its quality control process and maybe discression should be used before you buy.

This is superb!
Ignore all the 1 star reviews. This product is great, although it did take a while to build. Bought as a Christmas present for my 7 year old son, I was the one who had to build it as it can be difficult and fiddly. Nevertheless, the end result was worth it. It's solid and strong. It functions perfectly and my son has already had hours of enjoyment out of it, grabbing and lifting all sorts of things. I can only assume those reviewers who said it doesn't work either got a duff one, or didn't build it correctly. A great buy!
