To start with, this game runs beautifully, a seamless 60fps in both docked and undocked mode, a real achievement. Graphically it's decent, cutscenes aside, squint and you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this and the PS4/XBONE versions. It does include Ultimate team, which is a really nice thought (FIFA ULTIMATE TEAM ANYWHERE) and a career mode, which is playable but ultimately is a reskin of last years offering, not the new shiny mode that the other consoles get. THERE IS NO JOURNEY MODE. There is an option for local multiplayer with single Joy Cons, very limited due to a lack of buttons (no finesse shots!!!) but perfectly playable for a quick game on the train I would imagine. Another major gripe is the fact that you can't play an online game with someone from your friends list. Seriously, online is completely random. Hopefully this will be addressed with a future patch, most likely when the paid online service from Nintendo goes live in 2018. All in all, this game plays very well, looks sharp and clean and despite missing a few of the new features, is a very decent effort. If you own a PS4 or XBONE and don't plan on playing on the go, it's probably best to steer clear of this. Otherwise, it's certainly a very nice version, call it FIFA 18 Lite maybe..... ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ FIFA’s back! *by P***D on 29 September 2017* If you’ve owned Nintendo consoles over the past decade, then you’ll need no reminder of how gimmicks and an eventual lack of support hampered the brand. And now here we are with FIFA 18 - a release that is by far and away the FIFA experience on a Nintendo console yet. It isn’t perfect, so let’s get a couple of niggles out of the way. You can’t play with Switch friends online, and that is quite frankly ridiculous, though this isn’t EA’s fault. Also, the popular Classic XI team is surprisingly absent, so that will be sorely missed. There are of course omissions that apply only to Switch - The Journey game mode being the most talked about. Since the animation is powered by the Frostbite engine, you won’t see the latest visual nuances in this Switch release, but it would be harsh to call this a deal breaker. FIFA 18 for Switch lies between the PS3/360 and PS4/XB1 in terms of its technical prowess, but most will agree that it actually balances more towards the latter. Frankly, the games looks beautiful and you would be hard pressed to see these differences out of cutscenes and closeups. The gameplay is fluid and well balanced, with great attention to detail across all aspects of the game. Defending is sensible with good jostling and realistic tacking, passing can be customised to a high degree (Keeping things in full manual can enhance your creativity) and shooting is fun. If you take the time to learn many of the controls, you can pull off some surprising moves! The Journey aside, all the game modes you would expect are here and equal to other formats. I love the new main menu with its quick access to each panel, and the ability to use the shoulder buttons to flick through pages quickly. Loading times are also better than other formats, mostly probably due to the lack of optical media. I’m really glad that EA have made a good effort with this release, and the results show.
