I have also tried charcoal and pastel, while charcoal was fine though due to small tooth could be smudged easily, I personally would not recommend to use it with pastels. The convenient A3 format allows not only to sketch but also make detailed drawings. I have personally used in a life drawing class. The hard cover adds to overall convenience as one does not need to carry a drawing board. The fact that it has spiral bound makes it doubly useful especially if drawing in a confined area.
