A reliable shaving soap with a great lather.
I’ve used the Proraso Shaving Soap in a Bowl several times now, and it has become one of my favourite shaving products. The scent is fresh and classic without being overpowering, and it gives a really clean, traditional shaving experience. The soap builds a rich, creamy lather very easily with a brush, and it provides excellent glide and protection during shaving. It leaves my skin feeling smooth and comfortable afterwards, with very little irritation even when used regularly. I also like the bowl format, which is convenient and easy to use, and the soap seems to last well, so it offers good value for money. A little goes a long way, and the quality has been consistent every time I’ve bought it. Overall, this is a reliable shaving soap with a great lather, a pleasant scent, and excellent performance. I’d happily recommend it and will definitely keep buying it.

Be bald, they said. It'll be cheaper, they said. Nobody mentioned the emotional trauma.
There comes a point in a man's life when he has to make a decision. Continue desperately clinging to the increasingly sparse collection of hairs on his head, or embrace the inevitable and shave the whole lot off. "Just shave it," people said. "You'll save a fortune on haircuts. It'll be so much easier." These people are liars. What they failed to mention was that maintaining a beautifully bald head requires a surprising amount of equipment, preparation, patience and, apparently, emotional resilience. My journey to this particular tub of shaving soap began, as so many of life's great tragedies do, with a group of drunk students. Picture the scene. A perfectly ordinary evening. The sort of evening where a middle-aged man should be able to go about his business without becoming the unwilling centrepiece of somebody else's entertainment. Enter a group of students. There were approximately six of them, although I may have counted one twice because he kept moving around. One was wearing an oversized grey hoodie, the sort that looks like it was designed to accommodate three people and a small family dog. His trousers were hanging somewhere around his knees, apparently held up by nothing more than optimism. Another was wearing a bright orange puffer jacket, despite the weather being perfectly reasonable. He had a haircut that looked like someone had placed a mixing bowl on his head and attacked the exposed areas with garden shears. There was a lad in a Newcastle United shirt, which I initially considered a promising sign of regional solidarity, until I noticed he was wearing it with beige cargo shorts, white socks pulled almost to his knees and sliders. An outfit so spectacularly offensive that I briefly forgot I was the one being judged. One of the girls was wearing what appeared to be a dressing gown masquerading as a coat, enormous sunglasses despite it being dark, and boots that looked capable of surviving an Antarctic expedition. Another had enough fake tan to change the colour of the pavement if it rained. And then there was their leader. A young man wearing a black North Face jacket, grey jogging bottoms, a tiny cross-body bag and the sort of expression usually associated with someone who's just discovered they can get a reaction out of strangers by shouting things. He spotted my head. "OI! BALDY!" Now, I've been bald for a while. I'm familiar with the terminology. It's not exactly an imaginative insult. It's like shouting "OI! SHOES!" at someone wearing trainers. Nevertheless, his friends found this absolutely hilarious. One suggested my head was reflecting the streetlights. Another asked whether I polished it. Someone else wanted to know if I used furniture wax. Furniture wax. As if I'd spent years carefully researching razors, shaving brushes and skincare products only to discover that a quick application of Mr Sheen would have achieved the same result. I attempted to ignore them, but unfortunately I have a complicated relationship with abandonment. You see, I once left a perfectly good shopping trolley in a supermarket car park and spent the entire drive home feeling guilty about it. Was it lonely? Would the other trolleys accept it back? Had I somehow ruined its chances of ever being reunited with its little trolley family? I also still think about a pen I lost in 2008. It was a nice pen. Blue ink. Comfortable grip. Gone without so much as a goodbye. So when six drunken students began questioning the appearance of my head, I found myself wondering whether my hair had actually abandoned me, or whether we'd simply grown apart. Had I been neglectful? Should I have spent more time appreciating it when it was there? Had my follicles held some sort of secret meeting and collectively decided they'd had enough of me? Perhaps my hair hadn't fallen out at all. Perhaps it had simply moved on to someone younger, someone with better prospects, a more exciting social life and a full head of magnificent curls. I imagined individual hairs packing tiny suitcases, leaving little notes on my pillow. "It's not you, it's us." "We need space." "We've accepted a position on a 23-year-old in Manchester." Meanwhile, the students continued their commentary, apparently unaware that they'd triggered a full-scale psychological investigation into the breakdown of my relationship with my own scalp. Eventually, they wandered off towards what I assume was either a nightclub or a shop selling disposable vapes, leaving me alone with my thoughts, my dignity and a head that was apparently visible from space. And that's when I realised something. Being bald isn't cheaper. First you need a decent razor. Then replacement blades. Then a shaving brush. Then a bowl. Then soap. Then something to soothe your head afterwards. Before you know it, you've spent more money maintaining absolutely no hair than you ever spent when you actually had some. Which brings me, after what I appreciate has been a completely unnecessary journey through student fashion, childhood-style emotional insecurity and the imagined employment opportunities of my departed hair follicles, to this Proraso shaving soap. It's lovely. Genuinely lovely. It has a fresh eucalyptus and menthol scent, works beautifully with a shaving brush and produces a wonderfully rich, creamy lather that makes shaving my head a much more pleasant experience. A little goes a long way, the razor glides nicely, and the cooling sensation is particularly satisfying afterwards. It's a lovely soap and forms a lovely shaving foam. Five stars. My hair may have abandoned me, but at least Proraso hasn't.

Proraso Green (Menthol)
In my opinion this shaving soap has a nice fresh menthol scent to it. I found it incredibly easy to load using a boar hair shaving brush due to the fact that it is a cross between a shaving soap and a shaving cream. It is so soft you can push your finger through it. On the first pass my initial reaction was that the menthol scent was there but, I couldn’t feel the cooling sensation you would expect. However after removing a layer of hair and re-lathering for my second pass the cooling sensation was very strong and quite enjoyable. On my third pass it was like ice. After three passes with my straight razor, the Proraso green provided great cushion, slickness, scent and cooling sensation for my shave. The post shave feeling left my face feeling fresh and protected. I used post shave balm just in case as I have sensitive skin but, this is in no way criticizing the post shave feel of the soap it was just me being cautious. The ingredients in this soap did not irritate my skin after the shave however, if you are not willing to risk it I know they do a white version specifically for sensitive skin. I do recommend you try this as it is a great soap and it did not have an effect on my sensitive skin. I have taken a picture of the ingredient list in an attempt to answer some of your sensitive skin questions. I tested this soap with both hard and soft water. It liked the soft water a lot more than the hard however it was excellent with both. I tried shaving with a shavette, straight razor and double edged razor. It felt protecting and slick with both. This soap has impressed me and I will be purchasing a Proraso red (sandalwood) soap next to give that a try. The soaps I have used in the past are Arko shave stick, Palmolive cream and shave stick and the Wilkinson Sword blue tub (let's never speak of this one again). It provided a similar lather to the Arko maybe a little bit slicker and it definitely smelled better. The slickness was similar to the Palmolive shaving cream and the cushion was similar to the Palmolive shave stick. I’m not sure if these comparisons mean anything to you but it never hurts to share experience with fellow wet shavers regardless.

Good lather = good shave
Good shaving soap: harder than some other soaps so requires a bit more lathering in the bowl but creates excellent creamy foam that helps deliver smooth, slick shave. Isn’t wearing down quickly (per previous point) so looks a good buy given it is markedly cheaper than other soaps that are no better IMO.

Lathers up beautifully with a brush, and it smells like you're on holiday. Impressed.
Great value and a joy to use. (Unlike that Ingram stuff I bought; it used to be SO good)

A luxurious shave
This is remarkable. For men who embrace the ceremony of shaving, the soap is critical. The foam should be luxurious but consolidated. It serves little purpose if it's too light and frothy, or cluggy and doesn't adhere to the stubble properly. This is where shaving cream in a can falls short, and a brush and soap are best. I've tried various shaving soap bars, most British in source (or claim), and most did the trick to a degree. I started using the Proraso pre-shave cream a while back when I couldn't find the British equivalent of a pre-shave cream I used called Prep, and was already using the Proraso Wood & Spice After Shave balm, so I thought I'd give the shaving soap in a bowl a go. I am so glad I did. It is next-level luxurious, and when worked in with the shaving brush, the menthol and eucalyptus oil make it cool and soothing. The foam is not frothy like some soap bars produce; it is cream-like. This improves the actual shave. Combined with the other two Proraso products mentioned, I now have a go-to kit that makes shaving a pleasure instead of a chore.

Good lather; good value for money
For those that enjoy a wet shave this has to be one of the best options. We live in a had water area and I have tired them all, many of them very expensive. This has to be the best value for money option with a terrific lather

Good, low price shaving soap (with bowl!)
Much better than some of the other shaving creams I've used. Get a good brush and soak it in hot water, and this lathers up nicely. The best part is that it comes in it's own bowl, so you dont need to invest in a soap bowl. I get a good shave with this. It dries out a little quickly compared to some higher fat soaps, but a quick reapplication sorts that out.

Awesome product. Its really as good as they say!
I initially did not like this product as i was used to the soft, creamy texture of the Taylor Of Old Bond Street shaving creams which i have used exclusively for some time. This product looks very "dried out" when you open it up in comparison to the TOBS products and initially i though that i had a faulty product. Not so! That's the way it's meant to be! However, once you follow the instructions and use it correctly you will find that it's absolutely awesome! The scent is great with a nice strong hint of a menthol. The scent is not too overpowering but not so subtle that you can't smell it once you have finished shaving. In my opinion it's the perfect balance. The lather is awesome; as good as, if not slightly better than the lather from the TOBS that i am used to. Once you have "bloomed" the cream and then applied a little to the brush it whips up into the most awesome thick rich creamy lather in seconds. Once on the face the razor glides thru the richness of the lather with ease as it has a really nice slickness. No wonder it has been Italy's favorite shaving cream for generations. While i still love the softer, creamier TOBS shaving cream products i will be adding this one into the rotation along with the rest of my regular TOBS shave creams as it's just too nice to not use. Now it's got me wanting to try all the other Proraso versions! Buy with confidence. Its awesome!!

Top!

Great scent, great shave
I've been a fan of traditional shaving soaps ever since my older brother taught me how to use a strop. While I've long since switched to a modern safety razor, I've never lost my appreciation for the ritual itself. There's something about working up a rich lather with a shaving brush and applying it by hand that elevates an otherwise routine daily chore into a more deliberate and refined experience, a small moment of self-care. After quite a bit of research, I settled on Proraso, and I see why it is popular among traditional wet shavers. The soap lathers easily, provides excellent lubrication, and leaves the skin feeling comfortable rather than dry or irritated. The scent is pleasant without being overpowering, and the quality of the shave is consistently brilliant. If I have one minor criticism, it's the container itself. The tub is made of plastic and, while sturdy and perfectly functional, it lacks some of the charm and character of a ceramic shaving mug sitting on the bathroom counter. And I'm not sure how well the soap "puck" would transfer into the latter. That said, this is a shaving soap, not a display piece. In the end, Proraso delivers exactly what I was hoping for: a smooth, comfortable shave and a welcome touch of old-world craftsmanship in an increasingly disposable world.
