is there a difference between magnesium flakes and epsom salts? Which is the better route to greater mag absorbtion?

Hi we were told by a physiotherapist that magnesium chloride is best absorbed by the skin. You can make your own solution up by using one cup of magnesium flakes and one cup of cooled boiled water,still hot enough to dissolve the magnesium flakes, Store the solution in a spray bottle and spray your body with about 10 ~14 short bursts after a shower or bath, it can sting just a little but that is o.k. This way is much more economical than using 250 grams in your bath, I have found that it has helped me with my insomnia. Remember that you only absorb about 4% of the magnesium in tablets and they use magnesium oxide which is cheap and not much good according to my chemist. Hope this helps.

I use a ratio of 1 part flakes to 3 parts water.  Eg measure out 300ml of cold distilled water (distilled preferably, as lasts almost indefinitely) or filtered water.  Measure out 100g of flakes, add to water, stir for about half a minute or until flakes are completely dissolved, and bottle.  The approximate equivalent of 1 x 5ml teaspoon is about the equivalent to 200mg of magnesium, which is approximately half a daily recommended dose when taken internally, but as you could expect to absorb it better through the skin, this may be all you need.

They can be used in and ice bath but absorption would be slowed due to the pores of the skin closing.  The optimal absorption is achieved in a warm bath as pores will be relaxed and open.
