Pretty nice solution
I finally got around to ordering something like this to clean up the cruddy, flaking buttons on my steering wheel. First of all, the sizing of these is spot-on -- each fits exactly like it should on top of the old buttons, and the only difference I notice is that the buttons are now slightly "taller" than they were before. Not a problem; I'll get used to the subtle difference. Essentially these are self-adhesive button covers that you press on over the top of the old buttons -- you do NOT replace the old buttons. Each has the appropriate opaque indicators for the backlights to shine through, and that works just fine; at night they look and light up just like the originals. Several thoughts/tips, though. First, if your button is not messed up you can either skip that button altogether and only deal with the ones that have problems. But the heights of the original and updated buttons will be slightly different, so for me I would do them all at the same time. Second, for those buttons that are okay, you have the option of peeling off the old layer covering the button or leaving it as it is. Seems it will adhere just as well either way. My hesitance to leaving the old covering on is that it might diminish the amount of the backlight that will make its way through. And finally, once you remove all that old peeling button covering, the underlying buttons are white. When the new buttons are on, though they are a great fit, I can still see just a bit of the white below in the gaps between buttons. I would recommend running a black (or dark color) sharpie around the edges of each button to eliminate those white edges and it will make the whole thing look just a little bit better. (the two attached pictures show what the buttons on one side of the steering wheel looked like before replacement, and what the other side looked like after)
