I LOVE this FAN!
The Patton 18" high velocity fan is a wonderful product, and we are so happy we bought it. It is extremely powerful, and just emits the standard, white noise purr of a fan. It is sturdy and strong. Be prepared for a real wind storm when it is on the highest setting (it has 3 speeds). This is not a cheap, plastic "toy" of a fan, it is the real deal. Lasko also makes a metal fan similar to this model (I believe the Lasko fan is 20" in size), but, the advantage Patton has over any Lasko fan is that the circuit breaker in the plug in the Patton fan is completely replaceable if it is ever "blown" for some electrical reason. Not so, with Lasko fans.None of their fans have removable circuit breakers in the plugs, so if a breaker fails, well, I guess you throw away the Lasko fan? Seriously, at the very least, you would have to take it in to be repaired and to have the cord replaced and that could get expensive! Does it sound like I have a problem with Lasko fans? You bet.I purchased this Patton fan to replace the Lasko #3723 20-Inch Premium Box Fan 3-SPEED I previously purchased from Amazon. The Lasko fan has cheap and flimsy plastic blades, no where near the power of this Patton fan, and, after just 3 days of use, started to emit this terrible clicking noise when it was running. The Lasko fan was promptly returned, and I ordered this Patton model to replace it. I have never looked back. This fan, for only a few dollars more, is twice the fan the Lasko model was. If you need an indoor fan (or even one for the patio in dry weather or the garage), definitely go with this Patton 18" fan. You will be glad you did!

This is not your grandfather's fan...
...and it's not meant to be. Those fans, which can still be bought, are 20" and are built with more heavy duty parts. This is not that fan and is not intended to be a replacement for one. Those that have rated this one compared to the old ones are not rating it on it's own merits but instead on what they wanted it to be.Others have rated this relatively low based on the noise level. Well look at the thing. It's obvious just from the picture that it's a loud fan. Patton is in the business of moving air. Lots of it. Moving air about generates sound. The more air you move, the more sound you make. There's no way around that fact.Congratulations, to both groups of reviewers. You failed. To the rest that rated this fan on what it is, good job. Now, on to my own review:All in all, a great fan. I've had it for some months now and the black paint hasn't peeled or scratched. It's looks just like it did when I took it out of the box. It moves air. Tremendous, unbelievable amounts of air and it does it with fairly little sound. Don't get me wrong, it's a loud fan. Just not as loud as I had expected.I bought this to replace for a 20" Patton knockoff fan that had given up after 5 years of heavy use. On it's low setting, this fan moves more air than the 20" it replaced did on high. Swap that around. This one on high made less noise than my bigger one on low. Compared to other fans it's own size I've dealt with through the years, it also stacks up very nicely. It moves a lot more air and is relatively quiet about it.The cage is sturdy enough although made of slightly lighter steel than would prefer. It collects surprisingly little dust and, in my house, dust is a cash crop. I've only had to give it a cursory wiping with my hand once. Even on the highest speed, there is fairly little resonant vibration in the cage. That is likely a good part of the reason the fan is comparatively quieter than similar ones. Again, though, I must stress that this isn't a quiet an and isn't meant to be. It stays where I put it on the floor and at the angle I want it, regardless of the speed setting. I've seen similar fans move themselves up and down as well as all over the place, on a smooth floor.I would like to have seen this come with a heavier gauge cord too. It's 18 gauge. While that is adequate, after my 1 year warranty is up, I'm almost certainly going to replace it with 14 or 12 gauge wire. The length is acceptable too. Another 2 or 3 feet would be better and is another reason for me to replace the cord, when the time comes. The motor housing does get hot but not to the point that I really worry about burning myself. After several hours on low, I can hold my hand on the housing for upwards of 20 seconds before it gets uncomfortable. I should note, though, that I work heavily with my hands and can tolerate things better than many people. As an example, the temperature of the dishwater I use turns my wife's hands bright red. Anyway, to the point. The housing doesn't get too hot. When I replace the cord, I suspect it will run even cooler because of the reduced impedance. Which, not entirely incidentally, will extend the life of the motor. Not that I expect the motor to fail any time soon. Peeking into the housing, the motor looks well made. The copper windings are tight and neat. I've seen electric motors so messy that it was a wonder they even worked let alone didn't catch fire. The fan blades are quite well balanced although not perfect. A perfect balance is a very difficult thing to do to be sure. I'm certainly not going to take the fan apart to try and get it better. It's easily more than good enough as it is. Here's another area that I'm surprised with. The amount of dust on the blades is quite small. The fan spent most of the summer running between 4 and 16 hours daily. Yet there is very little dust on the blades. I don't have any reason to clean the blades. So, for my 4 star rating. If the cage were a little heavier gauge and but for the merely acceptable power chord (<--- ha! heavy metal!), I would have given this 5 stars with no reservations. As is, it easily earns the 4 I gave it.There seems to be some confusion as to the assembly required. Here's the instructions:Step .01 Take it from the box and remove all the packaging.Step .02 Plug it in.Step .03 Turn it on.There's also some question as to where it's made. That would be China. In many people's minds, "Made in China" automatically equates with "It's JUNK". Well it doesn't. The Chinese are just as capable of making a quality product as any other country and this is one of them. I do prefer buying things that are made in the States. That's not because of quality. I don't want burst anyone's bubble, Actually, yes I do. I like it when people are forced to think for themselves. Americans make just as many flimsy, cheap piece of junk products as the Chinese do. Don't buy something based solely on where it was made unless keeping your money in your own country is your main concern.

It's a BLAST
This fan absolutely blasts the air. Bought it to move my cool a/c air from a window a/c into another room and boy does it do the job. I now use it when I'm on the treadmill and a quick way to dry my hair which is long and thick. Heat from blow driers damage hair but you can dry long thick hair sitting in front of this fan for 2 minutes. Best money I ever spent.
