The current medical paradigm needs to focus on better nutrition to resolve many common health problems
For years I've seen with disgust how Americans eat. The amount of unhealthful foods consumed is really disgusting to observe, especially by children just following the example set by their parents. Doctor Lonsdale calls this "high calorie malnutrition"—we consume lots of calories but too much of the wrong kind, which send the wrong signals to our bodies. Just as chemical drugs have side effects, so does the wrong diet have side effects. He firmly believes that the current medical model treats the symptoms that often miss the root cause of the problem. In order to change the current medical paradigm, it will have to come from the medical care recipients, the patients, saying no to the quick fix option. Throughout the book he makes his point by presenting cases from his 60 years of practice. Many of the ailments are common ones—for example, sleep apnea, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), caffeine, allergies, obesity, irritable bowl syndrome, Pre Menstrual Syndrome, and more. For each one he explains why the diet and nutrition prescribed worked when traditional medicine did not. However he does not condemn current medical model, hence he refers to his model as complementary alternative medicine. He just wants the medical field to be more knowledgeable about the natural chemical balances in our bodies before attacking problems like Don Quixote. Even though I have succumbed often to prescriptions for my ailments I always dislike the choice, partly because of my dislike for foreign chemicals in my body, partly for the ubiquitous side effects, and mostly because I had a sixth sense that I could overcome some of my (minor) problems thru more exercise and better diet. But I never pursued learning more about alternative medicine even tho I have friends who strictly follow it. I do have a natural predisposition to believing that the bio chemical balances in the body and brain are much more complex than most will admit. And Doctor Lonsdale is masterful at explaining scientific knowledge in a way that I can understand without my eyes glazing over. He does this by clarifying points with the use of analogies such as computers, symphonies, combustion engines, diagrams and more.Quotes from book The doctor does not heal anyone. It is the body that heals itself and the doctor must teach the patient how to retrieve his or her own health and that is what the New Medicine is all about We must conclude that it is the ratio of calories to the vitamin/mineral nutrients required to process the calories like the analogy of the choked internal combustion engine. We use the word “energy” to describe physical function when we say that someone is extremely active. What we forget is the fact that such activity is consuming cellular energy. Thus, many people are using caffeine in order to “get to work” because they are so fatigued and do not seem to have benefitted from a night’s sleep. What they are failing to recognize is that they are simply stimulating cellular function that consumes energy that they can ill afford. The underlying mechanism of their fatigue is lack of efficiency in the mitochondria, the “engines” of the cell. By far and away the commonest cause is poor diet as I have repeatedly emphasized in these pages.

Practical Guidance for Wellness - Made a Huge Difference in Our Lives
Dr. Lonsdale writes with the clarity and wisdom that come from years of experience in helping patients to heal themselves. He is an outstanding writer and physician. My wife had suffered for years with disautonomia and tachycardia. She was no longer able to drive and was at risk of losing her job. A barrage of tests and treatments from the hospital only made things worse leading to discouragement and depression. Following Dr. Lonsdale's nutritional approach, she is now symptom free. She resumed driving, saved her job and as able to do all the little things, like taking our kids to the zoo, that she had stopped doing because of health issues. This book is useful for both physicians and "normal people." Anyone interested in health and wellness would benefit from reading this book. It is practical and sound advice for healing and wellness

A true pioneer, mentor and friend - Kudos Dr. Londsdale!
Dr, Lonsdale shows his brilliance yet once again. I true pioneer in alternative medicine; his wide breadth of knowledge, wisdom and experience form to make this an excellent read. I highly recommend this latest book by a man who has spent a lifetime studying medicine and caring for his patients as a true humanitarianLaura DeVincentis, ND, LAc

Who should read this
Obesity, diabetes, autism, irritable bowel syndrome and a host of other maladies plague 21st-century society. We look to health care professionals for help and guidance. However, Derrick Lonsdale, MD questions whether modern medicine actually is helping us live better, healthier lives or whether it is turning a blind eye to a significant part of the problem.Dr. Lonsdale worked as a pediatrician at the renown Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio for 20 years. Widely published in scholarly journals, his background is in vitamin therapy and the deep-seated impact nutrition has on both physical and emotional illnesses in adults and children.High-calorie malnutrition is at the root of many of today’s maladies, Lonsdale writes in A NUTRITIONAL APPROACH TO A REVISED MODEL FOR MEDICINE. While a body fed on sugars and starches does not feel hungry, the key calorie\vitamin ratios in the body are knocked askew. Nutritional substitutes and caffeine are not the answer.A NUTRITIONAL APPROACH states that there is an overriding brain-body relationship that must be understood and that what we eat is just as important as whether we eat at all. In his decades of practice and research, Lonsdale was confronted again and again by the link between nutrition and wellness, between our mental state and our physical state. “Mental is just as physical as physical is mental,” Lonsdale says. If there is a single-sentence take-home message from this book, it might be: “Sugar is not so sweet for our nutritional health.” High-calorie malnutrition is an extremely widespread scourge, Lonsdale discovered in his years of practice. He believes that most, if not all, disease is in some way the result of loss of cellular energy from poor diet – much the same way a car engine loses power if its fuel is different from that which fits its design. Much attention is placed on the function of the limbic brain. The limbic brain controls our basic animal functions and can be compared to a computer that receives complex biochemical messages from inside the body and emotional stimuli from outside the body. It works constantly so there is little surprise that one becomes tired when bombarded with stimuli. For many people today, a quick hit of candy, soda or other high-sugar carbohydrates appears to be a solution. Yet, it never seems to satisfy. That is because the easiest way to de-energize actually is through the consumption of “junk” food and beverages, Lonsdale maintains. Nor are measures that serve to cover-up problems – like the Ritalin so often prescribed for hyper-active children – the answer. Lonsdale’s research and practice has confirmed time and again that “we are what we eat” needs to be paired with “we behave according to what we eat” as a medical aphorism. Technical enough to satisfy the rigors of the professional yet simple enough for the lay reader to understand, A NUTRITIONAL APPROACH offers numerous cases that are worth studying both by concerned parents and physicians. Lay readers can skip the biochemistry in later chapters. Yet every thinking, eating person should devour Lonsdale’s work and then reconsider the nutritional program they offer themselves and their family members.--Curt HarlerFebruary, 2015
