## Description

The New York Times bestselling author of Reality-Based Leadership rejects the current fad of "engaging" employees and the emotional drama of "meeting their needs"--returning leadership to leaders and productivity to businesses. For years now, leaders in almost every industry have accepted two completely false assumptions--that change is hard, and that engagement drives results. Those beliefs have inspired expensive attempts to shield employees from change, involve them in high-level decision-making, and keep them happy with endless “satisfaction surveys” and workplace perks. But what these engagement programs actually do, Cy Wakeman says, is inflate expectations and sow unhappiness, leaving employees unprepared to adapt to even minor changes necessary to the organization’s survival. Rather than driving performance and creating efficiencies, these programs fuel entitlement and drama, costing millions in time and profit. It is high time to reinvent leadership thinking. Stop worrying about your employees’ happiness, and start worrying about their accountability. Cy Wakeman teaches you how to hire “emotionally inexpensive” people, solicit only the opinions you need, and promote self-awareness in your whole team. No Ego disposes with unproven HR maxims, and instead offers a complete plan to turn your office from a den of discontent to a happy, productive place.

Review: Freaking Brilliant and So Clear and Intutive- You'll Wonder Why You Didn't Think of This Yourself - Freaking Brilliant as always! I heard Cy speak at SHRM 2017 and very quickly bought her books and I am applying the (very easy to understand) principles at work. I finished the book this week and it was a series of wonderful revelations. And a lot of the revelations came with validation. I have been skeptical of employee engagement surveys for a long time, stating that they ‘held us hostage’ and that ‘complainers are going to complain no matter what we do’ And ‘why are we asking everyone what they think, why don’t we just survey the people who are the best performers’ and ‘not all turnover is bad turnover’. For this I was told I was a ‘bad’ HR person. Hearing my thoughts, (expressed so well) was wonderful in making me feel that I am not alone. I have been also using some of the phrases and lessons from the book. When someone starts going on an ego trip, I put the brakes on the bus, and ask, ‘lets recap the things we know are true’. ‘What you are saying is that based on the behaviors exhibited, Jane is not accepting her new reality’. Asking for people’s buy in. I talk about this in meetings and everyone is all, “Wow that’s brilliant” or “You handled the situation so well” or “Thanks for getting the meeting back on track so quickly” So I have to say, the SHRM meeting hooked me initially, but now that I am two books in “Reality Based Leadership” and “No Ego” I’m a #TrueRBLeiver
Review: Love! - Cy is incredible. Although I’m not in the medical industry, her lessons are always relatable and so helpful especially when leading a team!

After I listened to a third of the book on Audible, I then purchased the hard copy and several of Wakeman's other books. I've already read it several times and shared it with colleagues. I wish I would have read this YEARS ago!
