Soft hair and color that's evenly distributed - Spicy Cinnamon
I had dyed my hair two months ago and did not like the uneven results and straw like hair I got. So I thought maybe I should try a natural product like henna. I never have used henna before I did not know what to expect (green or orange hair or no hair?). When I looked at the package, the powder was very greenish like green tea and so I thought oh no! But I did start and only used 1/4 of the package with boiled distilled water to a semi-thick paste which turned out to be all I needed for my hair which is medium long. That is a lot less to use and cheaper than the dyes I had used before. I only left the mixture set an hour before use. I put ginger in the mix to help smell and the smell was not bad, and a little white vinegar for activation. I used a plastic barbecue brush to apply the mixture to my hair, plastic utensils to mix it and glass bowl, old t-shirt, plastic gloves and old towel. I waited about three hours with shower cap on. I didn't apply any heat although the instructions says so. I rinsed the henna out of my hair leaning over a plastic container in the bath tub (the henna is thick and I didn't want it messing up the drain.) This worked okay and kept the tub clean too. I used a conditioner on second rinse to help remove the henna. The conditioner was very helpful. The color I got was the color I wanted (I have 1/3 gray in mouse brown hair naturally.) The gray in my hair accepted the henna quite nicely. The color was evenly distributed, and reddish-gold brown in color. Overall I am pleased because my hair now has more body and is so soft. This didn't dry my hair at all as my hair was dry to begin with so it actually conditioned it. My scalp condition also improved. I hope the color lasts and doesn't change later on to something funny, but so far I like this product very much. The allergy test I did before hand showed no staining on my skin and the strand test showed the color that I would get. The instructions with the product were very clear.

Never Going Back Again
I have the coloring of a redhead -- pale skin and billions of freckles -- but my hair is naturally a kind of mousy brown. I used to color my hair with your standard issue Clairol et al, but it made my scalp SUPER sensitive and reading the ingredients on the box made my head hurt. So I began looking for a natural alternative that would still give me the red color I desired without frying my scalp and potentially flooding my body with all sorts of corrosive chemicals. I heard about henna from a friend and decided to give it a whirl. I first tried Light Mountain's plain Red shade, but didn't think it gave my hair enough of a red color -- it was more of a dark auburn than red. So I decided to give Bright Red a try and it was perfect! Rather than wiping the slate clean each time you apply it, henna adds to itself. I've colored my hair three times with this now and each time, the end result is a little different, but still a color I love. The color doesn't fade and it has a sort of natural, subtle ombre effect. My hair looks so much more "alive" with the subtle color differences, not to mention the shine and body the henna gives it. My suggestions: * WEAR GLOVES. If you don't, you'll end up looking an Oompa Loompa, I promise. You will also want to "grease" your hairline and ears with petroleum jelly, Vaseline, or olive oil to prevent the henna from dying those bits as well. * This is going to smell super earthy -- like a combination of wet dirt and hay -- so I add a bit of essential oils to the mix. Tea tree oil is currently my favorite. Peppermint oil made my head feel extra warm and my scalp felt like it was burning towards the end. * The instructions tell you to use water to mix the henna, but when I did, I didn't feel like it added any color at all. I've since had much better luck by using apple cider vinegar to mix the henna. * The instructions will also tell you that the dye only needs to sit for a couple of hours before using it, but again, I didn't feel like it added any color. I highly recommend letting it sit overnight before using. The acidic apple cider vinegar + the longer sit time = more dye release, which means more color transfer. * I like to experiment with additions. My favorite at the moment is a mix of paprika and cayenne pepper. I haven't figured out the exact perfect amount since I just eyeball it every time. And if the end result isn't what you were going for, you can mix up another batch and try again!

Spicy Cinnamon-Great quality and easy to use.
Very easy to use product. The instructions are clear, and the gloves provided worked well. I have never dyed my hair before, and wasn't sure what to expect, especially since everything I had read about henna hair dye explained that the colors vary, depending on your own hair color. I am not savvy to hair dye, so my method to trying henna for the first time was to just go all in. The instructions suggest using distilled water, doing a strand test, and placing some of the henna product on an inner elbow for an allergen test. For the strand test, I took hair out of a hair brush, put it in a plastic baggy, then mixed in the suggested amount of henna indicated on the box. The box recommends waiting 45min-4hrs to see how the test hair does. I waited 30min, satisfied with the results that were showing. For the allergen test, I put some of the henna mixture from the strand test onto my inner left elbow and let it stay there for 30min (same amount of time I did the strand test). Again, the box recommends more time, but I was excited and lost some self control. I did not use distilled water, but bottled water. I don't know if that makes a huge difference, but I am happy with the results, so no complaints. Some people use hair dye application brushes to put on the henna. I did not. I put the gloves on that came in the box and rubbed it into my roots, then worked my way down. A bit messy, but not terrible. After applying it all, I used plastic wrap to put around my head, then put a beanie on top of that to keep my head warm. The heat helps the color develop. About 2-3 hours later, I rinsed it out in the shower. It did not stain my body or the shower. The only con would be the hay/wheatgrass/tea/barnyard smell of the henna once you add water to it. I didn't mind, but it's worth mentioning if you're sensitive to smells. This was a wonderful experience. I am satisfied with the quality of the product and fully plan on buying it again in about a month to boost the color/make the red more vibrant. The benefits to my hair are noticeable as well; the hair is thicker and stronger. I haven't noticed a change in the amount that falls out, though that isn't a concern for me. Shipping was quicker than I expected, though the box was a little beat up when it arrived. Not something I minded since it didn't affect the products efficiency at all. But again, if it's something you care about, it's good to be aware of.

Great quality
love the quality, love the color and love that there is plenty to use each time. Smells great for people who are use to with henna or herb smell.

good color - you need to get the recipe right
This may be true of all henna, but I found this very difficult to work with. It was clumpy and gritty and kept falling off my hair. It took my husband about an hour to put it all on, and I think areas were missed. I'll try it again but next time with coffee and additional liquid to see if that helps. Where it has colored my hair it looks really nice. Update 2015: I found a better recipe with trial and error and now can apply fairly easily. I mix the powder either with amla or potassium bitartrate - enough to create a mildly acidic mix - and add distilled water until it is like mashed potatoes. I let it sit for 14 hours and then add a little more water and apply thickly like icing, and I find it adheres well. Next I wrap my head in saran wrap and a scarf and wait 4 hours. Over the next few days the color changes to a deep red which doesn't fade. With one batch I had a reaction and the skin on my ears itched and flaked, perhaps some other natural plant was mixed in, or perhaps it was something else and not the henna. These days I mostly use henna ordered from Mehandi because of the independent laboratory testing. But this one works well and I use it from time to time when convenient. (By the way, don't use coffee - you absorb too much caffeine through your scalp during the long time it is on there.)

Changed dark brown/ black color to a vibrant reddish cinnamon brown
So excited because this actually changed my flat simple dark brown color to a vibrant reddish dark brown. My hair looks like so luscious! I love it. I have dry wavy hair and followed the directions, washed my hair with clarifying shampoo and towel dryer it, sectioned it and smeared the henna on as soon as it was cold enough. I mixed it with filtered water boiled water in a ceramic bowel. Left it on for 4 hours exactly covered with the plastic hood and heated with a dryer here and there. I made sure to kept it covered and moist because I read it only works while moist. Also the rinsing out was fast and easy.

Natural is the way to go!
First of all, let's get this out of the way. This is NOT a dye! If you've been dying your hair for years or even decades, don't expect this to be anything like a chemical dye. Think of it more like a mud mask that stains your hair. This will not look like a dye, it will not go on like a dye and it will not rinse out like a dye. But that's OK, it really is. The trade off is it doesn't smell like chemicals, it doesn't burn your skin and it doesn't ruin everything it plops on the minute it lands! Plus it adds a little something extra to the color that I can't quite define. I absolutely recommend doing the allergy and strand test. Only for the strand test I would recommend following the same curing step as for the actual application. Then go ahead and cake it on, like you will for your whole head application. When I did the strand test, I was disappointed. It didn't look like it would do much for my hair. But for the full application, I let the henna cure for 1 hour as suggested in the instructions, then left it on my head for 1 hour, applying heat with a hair dryer as instructed. The result was fabulous! This gave my hair a shine and dimension not possible with chemical dyes. As I said in the beginning, you should be aware that this is not your traditional dye. It is gritty like a mud mask. (Actually its very much like what comes out of a babies hinnie, but I'm too much of a lady to say it!)This won't apply like a traditional dye. My daughter (who's 16) who applies my dye when I'm too busy or broke to visit my hair dresser, moaned and groaned for about the first five minutes then finally got the hang of it when she accepted it wasn't going to go on like a traditional dye and changed her application method. I'm not sure I could have applied it myself. She spent about an hour just getting it on, then another ten or so minutes working it into my hair and making sure everything was covered. I don't think I'll be asking my regular beauty technician to take this on. All in all, the process took 3 to 3 1/2 hours. 1 hour to mix the henna and let it cure, 1 hour to apply , 1 hour to cure on my head (don't forget to heat your head up with a blow dryer every 10 minutes or so!) and half and hour to rinse (Rinse once, put in conditioner, let that sit for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse again.)So don't think you can slap this stuff on in an afternoon. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time. I'd set aside half a day, especially if this is your first time. Oh, one more thing you should know. Since this is not a chemical dye, it will not erase roots! You know, that line of demarcation you get when your hair is dyed a completely different color than it was meant to be. I'm a dark brown with chemically altered red, so my dark brown roots pop up after about 2 weeks. This won't completely erase them like a chemical dye would. But it will blend them in. Also, if your a blonde or a lighter brown, I would urge caution! If this took so well on my hair, I would think it would take even more on lighter hair! You may want to pay close attention on that strand test and maybe not let it cure so much. Also, I noticed that this color (bright red) had a lot of orange in it, which my dark hair can take and in fact, I think its that orange that gives my hair that extra dimension I was talking about. However, my guess would be that on lighter hair, that orange my be more prevalent than anyone would desire. In fact I'm planning on stepping down to red instead of the bright red on my next purchase. Bottom line is, this is natural and worth the work! I plan on using this from now on. Besides, it appeals to my inner hippie!

Henna Better Than Hair Dye
This arrived very quickly and I'm glad it comes in packs of 3 which is about what I might use in a year. It can be hard sometimes to find the Bright Red rather than just the Red and I like the color of the Bright Red better. If you've never used henna, it is good for your hair as opposed to hair dye which is bad for your hair and, eventually, makes it dry and brittle. I switched to henna some years ago and it is nice to use, if a teensy bit more effort. The box contains a plastic bag of the dry henna (always check the name of the color on the bag), and the instruction book with two plastic gloves and a plastic bag to cover your head attached to the instructions. If doing this for the first time, its a good idea to read the instructions before beginning. I'd recommend curing the henna before using as it means you can leave it on your hair less time to get a nice effect. Also, be sure to use distilled water and let no metal at all come in touch with the henna. It feels like clay when you put it on and it's a good idea to have some paper towels around to wipe off the counter and your skin once you're done putting the henna in your hair and have the plastic cap on. Then wrap the cap in a towel and find something to do (tv or book) for about an hour. Your hair will feel a bit course after you wash out the henna, but that will go away after the first shampoo. I'd recommend waiting to shampoo the first time, though, until the next day and expect some more color to come off your hair at that time. It takes a couple of good rinses to get all of the henna out. The color will fade faster than hair dye, but its so much better for your hair and scalp that its well worth it. You can also add some items to help it look more red and to make the henna smell nicer--like paprika or ginger, etc. The instructions will tell you what you can add for different colors. You can also make an event out of hennaing your hair, by inviting over friends to also henna their hair...that way you can all help each other get the henna on and off again and chat while waiting for it to set.

Henna colour
The colour is deep and rich and is quite dark if left in the max time. My hair was also thicker and had a nice shine

If hairs white, be careful. Do a strand test first
Used reds of this brand and they always turned out great, this one didn't turn out that good.

Rich colour! Love the product!
I like this brand as it’s a bit deeper red than orange. Read about henna before you buy! It kills me when I read reviews of people complaining henna is messy and makes hair dry. It might feel dry if you don’t add some oils and that feeling goes away in a few days. It doesn’t actually dry your hair... I love henna for my hair, it removes dandruff, makes strand stronger, hair much healthier than before!
