No One Rides For Free: An Extreme Novella

Highway horror
This novella is a prime example how word of mouth can market a story. Labelled as extreme horror, it was mentioned a ton on IG & I like a challenge, so I gave it a go. It starts with Jodi, a widowed single mother driving her kids to college. Her car is apprehended by a repulsive man holding a gun to her son’s head. Sonnet set the scene for a gripping highway horror.Events take a huge turn when Jodi & her family are subjected to inhumane torture from The Man. And they are horrendous in terms of violence. I’m a big fan of less is more. Sadly the violence & gore was so gratuitous, I disconnected from the scenes & began questioning the reality of the surroundings. Where are the other cars driving past on the highway? Why doesn’t Jodi signal to them when The Man is distracted? What about street cameras? A body was left out on the road, someone would see that. Breadcrumbs would lead. Now, what I liked about the book was Sonnet’s use of effective descriptions (not the gore) ‘the vehicle drank like sailor’ etc. I love it when a writer displays this type of talent. The most suspenseful part of the book was at the beginning when Jodi realises The Man has broken into her car. We don’t see him, but it’s his dialogue. ‘They ain’t allowed ta talk.’ Brilliant device.Readers who love the gore will enjoy this as it pushes the boundaries of human decency. For me, in terms of plot & Jodi’s characterisation, it needed way more than blood, bodily fluids & pain.

Splatterpunk
Okay, it's taken me long enough to have a taste of a splatterpunk book and I've finally read one. This book is brutal, disgusting and explicit. Ye have been warned..This was a short read but it doesn't half punch you in the stomach, leaving you with a bitter, sour taste in your mouth.Because this was a quick one to read, the plot and the characters didn't have much depth but that's okay ... It's a read to shock you and make you feel disgusted and uncomfortable while you read this utterly horrific day that these people went through, that will forever change their lives.I'm pretty sure there are more grim splatterpunk books to read out there but this book also touches on the psychology of the characters. For me, this read was like a reminder of the real monsters out there in the big ol' world. The world we live in harvests some monstrous people, I can imagine what was told on these pages to actually happen in real life ... But holy hell I really hope it never has and never will.

Not worth it
I’m an avid horror fan and can appreciate films like saw and hostel for their gore. This just isn’t worth it. Author brags about writing it in 10 days and honestly I can tell, it takes about an hour to read. Very boring and predictable and all of the horror is really just gross and immature. A disappointing first venture into the splatterpunk genre. Could have written better myself.

Dull
I read this in one sitting and found it very unbelievable. I’ve read worse and this had no atmosphere and was very predictable.

Not for me
Well written but nothing I can say I enjoyed just over the top and gross for the sake of it. Wrighting was really good, would have loved to read something a bit tamer I think her writing would speak for its self. Sometimes less is more leave something to the imagination.

Jesus..
Very good book, read it all within maybe an hour. But had to put it down for a bit and take a minute. It was incredibly disturbing and the content warning was much needed. Makes you feel sick after finishing it.

I need a shower so, congrats?
This was short, fast and gross. You really are thrown headfirst into vomit inducing descriptions. Basically, it's exactly how splatterpunk should be. Great read

For The Extreme and Bored
Let’s keep it real here. I saw this on a ‘hardest to read’ list on TikTok and basically wanted to challenge myself as what I consider a horror enthusiast. I found myself harboring at first a weird distaste for Jodi and then I was quickly on her team, rooting for her bloody vengeance down ‘til the end.Picture the scene from The Devil’s Rejects where the family is taken hostage, SA’d, and k***ed but in way gruesome literate detail, spanning a read that will take most people less than an hour to finish. It’s uncomfortable, to say the least. It goes way farther than Rob Zombie could ever in his wildest grindcore daydreams. There are things in this book that made me feel physically unclean to read so I had to skim it.If you’re really bored and like the grotesque, it may be for you. I found the writing style very easy to absorb which I appreciate because sometimes I find books to be ‘too wordy’ and a lot gets lost before getting to the point. However - as far as subject matter goes, yeah, I just don’t get why this is a genre people are nuts about. But I gave it a try. It’s gross. It’s wrong. lol.

Gutes Buch!
