Does the furniture wooden racks have a bad smell?

I didn't smell any bad smell, the material of the furniture wooden frame looked pretty good.

Will the stand hold piano books or sheets rather than an iPad?

Yes, the music stand will hold light piano books as well as sheets of music. It is not very deep, so keep that in mind. This is a beautiful instrument with very nice sound and features. There are very good pictures of this instrument in the reviews that will allow you to see the music stand. The books and sheets will rest against the lid. Hope this helps.

does it come put together or do i have to build it?

it comes in a heavy box......it is not fully assembles....my son-in-law had it put together in about 30 minutes and he said it was easy.....it's sort of a frame for the keyboard which drops in rather easily....I watched him and he said he had no problems at all. There are very few pieces....not a complicated puzzle. I really enjoy my piano... such a nice product....no regrets.
