rather than mains 240V, can i use the light with a battery connection? i.e. a 12V car battery

In theory this is probably possible as the LED chips will not be mains voltage - BUT do yourself a favour and find a doable solution. If you really must use this lamp and you really must use a 12V battery then look for a low power inverter that might be used to power mains equipment in a camper van or other vehicle.

I have both the old and new bulbs and use them adjacent to each other. The new bulb is larger in size so looks a bit bulkier but that said because the surface which emits the led light is larger, the area where the light spreads seems larger. Also I think the light from the new bulb is whiter so seems brighter because of this. The old one was slightly more yellow and so a bit more subtle. In regards to the effect on the plants - my plants have loved both bulbs and they have been plant savers especially during the darkness of the winter days.
