They are made out of some sort over very sturdy foam like material. They are very rigid and not floppy. They look real and are also very light which was nice for all the walking. One thing I did notice after a day of use is that the paint on one of the blades rubbed off slightly. I had these swords on my back and I think it was due to sitting on concrete benches all day at the fair. Just something to be aware of.
