Can this grind star of anise?

They are making more pods that will handle things other than salt & pepper. If what you want to grind is not oily I think it will work in either of the pods that come with the set. you'll find all sorts of info in the packaging

what is the size of the grinder without pod?

The grinder (without pod) is approximately 9" high and 3 ¼" around at base. When you push the pod into grinder, it adds about ½" to the height. The one I have is battery operated; however, it does not appear to be a difference in the size with the rechargeable type. I think it is a great item! Hope this helps.

We use it literally every single day and it is amazing. I’ve only had to change the batteries once. Best thing about this is it’s one handed use. Switching between pods is effortless one handed and frees up the other hand for stirring or rubbing the spices into meat. If this thing ever quits on me I’ll be buying another one without hesitation
