The natural characteristics of each pigment highlights the paint’s transparency level. In watercolour painting, thin washes are applied allowing the white of the paper to reflect through the wash. Permanence 112 out of 115 colours in our Professional Watercolour range are classed as ""permanent for artists' use”, rated AA or A for archival permanence to ensure that these colours used today will appear the same for generations to come.

Review: From Budget Paints to Professional — This Is Where I Landed - I’ve gone through the full watercolor journey — starting with budget paints, moving into student-grade brands, experimenting with several professional lines, and eventually settling on Winsor & Newton as my primary paint. This color is a perfect example of why. The pigment strength and transparency are on a completely different level compared to lower-grade paints. You get clean, luminous washes without the chalkiness or muddy mixing that I struggled with earlier in my learning process. A little goes a long way, so even though professional paint costs more upfront, it actually lasts longer for me. This particular color has beautiful depth and versatility. It mixes easily, layers well, and creates rich warm tones that are hard to replicate with cheaper alternatives. If you’re still using student paints and wondering whether professional watercolor is worth it — yes. There is a noticeable difference in performance, control, and final results. Winsor & Newton has become my go-to brand, and I keep coming back to it even after trying others.
Review: Cadmium Free Yellow: Purr-fectly Safe and Brilliantly Bright! - Cadmium Free Yellow: Purr-fectly Safe and Brilliantly Bright! I have cats and one of them loves to dip her paws into my dirty paint water jar… so I try to avoid anything toxic (especially cadmium) whenever possible. I’m glad Windsor and Newton has a line of alternative cadmium free hues. Cadmium free yellow was exactly what I needed for a tutorial I was following. The color looks essentially identical to its cadmium counterpart and still offers great results. In short, it’s a safer choice that doesn’t compromise on quality. My artwork (and my curious cat) both thank me! Edit: Reviews for additional colors Quinacridone Magenta: Perfect Magenta for a Clean, Vibrant CMYK Watercolor Palette I wanted to create a limited CMYK-style watercolor palette for travel, and after some research, I decided on Quinacridone Magenta as my “M.” I already owned a version from another reputable brand that used PR202, but I found it a bit too dull and dark for my taste. After comparing options, I chose Winsor & Newton’s Quinacridone Magenta, which uses PR122—and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The color is bright, transparent, and mixes beautifully with my lemon yellow and Phthalo Blue (green shade), producing clean, vibrant secondary colors without any muddiness. This pigment has become a staple in my portable palette and has truly elevated my color mixing experience. Highly recommend it to anyone building a compact, high-quality travel set! Yellow Ochre: A Must-Have Color for Any Watercolor Beginner I’m currently learning watercolors, and the tutorial book I’ve been using calls for Yellow Ochre in nearly every project. After working with it, I completely understand why. This warm, earthy yellow is incredibly versatile. I’ve used it in landscapes, food illustrations, animal studies, and more and it pairs beautifully with burnt umber. I’m continually discovering new ways Yellow Ochre enhances a painting. Its semi-opaque, granulating quality adds great texture and depth, and since it’s made from a single pigment (PY43), it behaves predictably and mixes cleanly. With excellent lightfastness on top of all that, it’s become an essential part of my palette— and it’s staying there for good!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the favorites
*by O***Z on August 27, 2024*

If you have never had the chance to use/get a look at this color. Please do. It's such a beautiful shade of blue, reminds me of summer time and water. Grabbed this big tube on a sale! Let me tell you a little does go a very long way. I tend to use these paints fresh out of the tube but they do keep nicely in self made pallets. When dried it only takes a few dabs of a wet brush or spray of water and the paint is back to vibrant life. Magic! Ahhhh I seriously love this color. In my experience the pigment is very vibrant, bold, smooth, and can help achieve different values in your color theory. I'd highly recommend the Opera Rose from this brand as well. Seriously you can't go wrong with this and that one paired. The tubes themselves are always filled to the brim so you are getting your value for your money thankfully, expcally in this economy lately. The seal tends to be on tight when they ship them so you don't have to worry about loose paint. Explodes paint however... That's a different story. Luckly there was no paint harmed on the way to my house. :) They did great with packaging and shipping. I'm also happy to say that they still perform as they always had. Buttery smooth and won't get in the way of your experience in expressing your art. No muddy pigment, clumps, binder separating, or anything along those lines. If you're into watercolors that stuff makes a difference as you learn and play with brands and time progresses. I've not found any issues with this brands professional sets of watercolors like this one. In my personal experience these are worth the extra saving up to get over the Cotmen set. The beginner watercolor set from W&N wasn't the most fun experience. It left me feeling frustrated and bad at art with the quality of the beginner set and the pigment wasn't bright enough for me. That's the best advice to give other than buying Big tubes on sale is the best value for your money guys, grab em you won't regret it. 10/10
