If Gwen's character was introduced as a side character with the same attributes she would be hated. If she would have fallen in love before she found out he was rich her character could have been saved. The main dude was selfish but he earned the right to be selfish. He saves fml and all she does is complain. Ruining his peace. No man in their right man would put up with her nonsense. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Not shayla's best work *by D***Z on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 11, 2014* I am at a loss as to how to review this book.. Not usually a fan of Historical Romance/ Erotica but being a huge Shayla Black fan I threw caution to the wind and purchased this book.The premiss is good. We have a war weary Nobleman Knight who after experiencing war upon war as well as witnessing a brutal murder of children decides he can't be a part of of the tyranny and greed that defines a feudal England. So he moves to a cabin far away from his home, family, titles and becomes a recluse. Our heroine Gwyneth is living a very unhappy life in her castle which after her parents death is taken over by her Uncle & Aunt. They make her a servant in their home (Cinderella?) and when a drought plagues their land her Uncle sends her to be married to the Sorcerer in the woods to appease him into making it rain.So our sorcerer knight now finds himself with a wife. The chemistry is there. The banter between the two is also quick and sharp witted. So what's my problem? Everything in between. Aric is so obtuse you want to help Gwyneth beat him over the head. He is such a self absorbed character it seems like he misinterprets almost every situation finding himself back peddling more often than not. I expected Romance and some type of steamy relationship but what I got was a detailed lesson in Britsh history and I mean detailed.While this is the first book in the series it stands to reason that it has to set up characters for the next 2 books in the series. Having experienced how emotionally damaged Aric was I don't think I could handle another drawn out book about the other damaged characters; one who we know already is traumatized from events in this book and the other who apparently has some deep seated issue which causes him to jump from battle to battle like he has a death wish.So while I didn't hate this book I was disappointed. It was a long drawn out yawn as I kept waiting for something exciting even engaging to happen between these characters. All the elements were primed unfortunately there was no match to light the fuse.What I liked: All of the old verbiage t'was, t'would , me Lord Shayla got that spot on.What I didn't care for:Too much of a history lesson not enough dynamic between the characters. I think I'll go back to my usual reading and leave the historical genre for those who can get into it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent historical romance *by B***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 7, 2015* I haven't read a historical romance novel in some time but because of liking the author I chose to take a chance. Well, I'm very glad I did‼ The story takes place in mid 1400's. The heroine Gwenyth is about 18 & hero Aric about 28. The young age of Gwenyth coupled with her parents dieing while she's just a young child and her aunt and uncle treating her like a servant leads to emotional immaturity & insecurity at times. However, it's understandable since she is cast out of the family castle to marry an assumed sorcerer. Aric keeps many secrets from Gwendylen & living as an outcast from family & village is quite a bleak picture to merely accept because Aric is "nice." They both dance around each other as well as towards each other. They are both lacking in open communication & have their own insecurities, therefore fall prey to significant misunderstandings during this unstable time in history & therefore daily life. *The plot is well developed with twists & turns, historical references understood, and characters relatable & realistic.* I NEVER found this book boring! I can't wait for book #2 to continue to read about this time period & how relationships prevailed despite unstable times.
