Harmony & Composition: Advanced Theory and Traditional Style Melody Composition Encompassing ABRSM Grades 6 - 8 Music Theory

Good

It lists a lot of rules that shall must be obeyed when you're trying to pass music grades but it never explains the reasons why. And it does not say that these apply only to western "common practice" thus ignoring vast areas of music that are equally valid. This sort of teaching must put a lot of children off musical education.

The book is of modest price - although only 32 of its 64 pages relate to relevant content, the remainder of the pages are blank, chapter headings or advertising other booksIt is rather abstract without continuity or detail to the point that it is unlikely to be much assistance to someone studing ABRSM Grades 6 - 8

Perfect little book with the information I needed to grasp harmony and composition in the later ABRSM grades. Literally saved me!! Excellent diagrams too that helped me picture things rather than just reading words on a page. It’s concise and no unneeded waffle! Less than I spend on coffee in one week :O

This is essentially the rules of traditional harmony with guidelines on how best to approach composition. It is a useful resource however it is very light on content. More examples, explanations, background, detail would have made for a better resource. Also layout is a bit disjointed e.g reference is made to Figured Bass but then figured bass is explained later in the book so I found myself jumping forward the back again. I'm a big fan of Sharon Bill but I found this book a little lacking.

This clearly written and well presented textbook provides invaluable help to students of music theory in bridging the gap between the lower grades and the considerably more advanced higher levels.

This is a bit of a rip off really yes the basics are in condensed form but in order to answer grade 6 - 8 theory questions you need much more detail you are far better looking at the books from Victoria Williams which take you systematically through all the requirements of the ABRSM grade theory. Whereas this book just gives an outline sketch and misses plenty out
