It takes 1 AA battery for the time and two C cell batteries for the chimes. I left the settings alone where it only chimes on the hour (full Westminster + hour strike). When setting it up for the first time, the directions state to insert the batteries and turn the time set dial on the back counterclockwise (which turns the hands clockwise) until it reads 5:50. Then rotate the time set counterclockwise until the hands reach 6:00 and it should chime the full tune and then strike 6 times. It did, so then I ignored the rest of the instructions and treated it like our wind-up clocks by rotating the set dial counterclockwise until it reached 7:00 and let it do it's full chime & strike before moving to the next hour. Rotate the dial to 8:00 and let it do it's full chimes and strike before moving to the next hour... and so on until I got to the correct time, then hung it on the wall. That was 4 hours ago and it's keeping perfect time and the chimes are still corresponding with the correct hour. The chimes don't sound fake or too tingy. The wife and I love it. Also there is a switch to silence the chime and toll from 11 PM until 0700. These switches are in the rear of the clock and are not available when the clock is mounted.
