Music Research: A Handbook

After years of using Vincent Duckle's book, I found it was time for a change for my Intro to Grad Studies in Music class, I decided it was time for a change.I find Sampsel's book to be quite good, and ideally suited to my needs.She divides the content into 15 chapters, corresponding to the 15 weeks in a semester.She identifies in each chapter the sources that every graduate student should be aware of with an asterisk. More specialized items have no asterisk, and can be divided up among the students in the class.She has a number of suggestions about research and writing--something that my students desparately need.She includes the electronic and web sources that are missing, for the most part, from Duckles.I find the text to be a valuable tool for my students, and would recommend it as a class text for any graduate music program.

This was required for a class when I bought it, but it was a useful reference later for writing my Master's thesis.

Great text clearly indicating appropriate research methods in the field of music. Purchased for a Masters level class; the book was very helpful as a guide to our weekly assignments.

If you are being asked to buy this book by a professor, chances are you don't actually need it. Many of the things discussed in this book are things that one picks up simply by virtue of going through undergrad. Discussions regarding style are similarly useless as every professor will have his/her own ideas about style and formatting, etc. Save your money, borrow it from some one else in the class.

This book is a great resource for music research. It provides a multitude of invaluable databases and encyclopedias for research.
