Dui Yao: The Art of Combining Chinese Medicinals

I purchased this book years ago when I was a TCM student. Recently, I purchased a copy for a friend who is studying herbs on his own. There isn't really a better book out there for self-study that isn't overwhelming yet still covers the theory well. I wish it provided the Chinese characters for the herbs and terminology. This isn't a drawback for somewhat how doesn't care, but would make the book more useful.

so important for modifying formulas to use duiyaos so they are support each other. My teacher recommends familiarizing yourself with all of these sets to become a strong herbalist as they are commonly found in classic formulas.

Very good book, all info you need to combine herbs

Great book for studying common herb combinations found in Chinese herbal formulas. It's a good adjunctive book.

For the student in Chinese Herbs, an easy to understand book on combining herbs, along with a do's and don'ts ...really is a reference book that should be on every herbalist's Book shelf!

Simple and good reference

Although this book is well written and useful for learning some of the many two-herb combinations of Chinese medicinals that a practitioner would need for his or her practice (and required for certification exams) the book has several could be improved. Most importantly, each combination should list the formulas in which it is found, or at least the major ones, so that the learning is properly linked to the main instrument of Chinese medicinals which is the formula. Also, while there is a table of contents, the index does NOT list herbs. Instead, it only lists conditions and other topics, so if you need to find combinations for a particular herb, you can either thumb through the entire book or you have to scan the entire table of contents. On the other hand there is a good introduction. A learning text needs a proper index.
