Q: Does it fit big or small?

I have a 35 inch waist and the medium is too small. If you have a 34 or 35 inch pant size I would order a large. At a 34 or 35 inch waist if you put over a sweatshirt you wont be able to hook up the velcro. With that said if you are on the boarder of sizes , go up!

Q: Do ends of the belt itself need to meet or is it ok for the tightening strap to bridge a gap of like 5 inches? My waist is 27 and belt is an XS. :/

Sorry, but it was awhile back and I don’t remember the exact construction or design of the belt.

Unfortunately you will have to base that on the measurement of your stomach, not your waist. There should be a chart in the information correlating measurement of wait to belt size
