Mrs Wordsmith Year 4 English Humungous Workbook, Ages 8–9 (Key Stage 2): with 3 months free access to Word Tag, Mrs Wordsmith's fun-packed, vocabulary-boosting app!

This is indeed a humungous book, with almost 200 pages of English learning and revision. Whilst it is great that it so extensive I think my son will find it too intimidating and wonder if 5 smaller booklets would have been better. There are 5 main sections- grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, spelling and reading and writing, and each section has its own index. Most topics are covered over a double page- with an introduction/explanation and then some examples/practice questions to work through. Some topics need multiple double pages, and each page has a reminder and then an extension explanation before more questions. The text on each page I nicely spread out- with plenty of space for answers, or to correct/improve their text by writing above each line. Almost every page also has a coloured illustration. The back of the book has answers so they can mark their own work or mark it with you. It says you get 3 months free trial of their app worth £24 but I cannot see any details within the book how to get this trial so I assume this might not be limited to those who buy the book but may just be a trial for anyone who downloads the app? Some of the reviews of the app said they were having trouble ending their free trial, and I’m not keen on trying it if its £8/month thereafter- there are plenty of other apps for free or smaller annual amounts.

Really good workbook that is clearly laid out and covers a lot of ground. Four stars.

My son has enjoyed this book and has dipped in and out of it for several weeks.The activities are fun, clear and well presented and seem to compliment his learning at school.It is a big book with loads of activities so will last some time.

I have only recently discovered this brand of workbook and I have always been impressed by the depth and detail.Aimed at 8-9 year olds, this workbook covers a variety of topics including comprehension, grammar, punctuation and spelling. Answers are provided at the back of this bright and colourful workbook, with a good balance between text and illustrations. The instructions are clear with examples to scaffold understanding. Terminology is defined throughout and I like how each section has its own contents page for ease of navigation.At the very start of the book is a useful guide on how to approach the workbook, particularly as you don’t need to work through the activities chronologically.There is a lot here and I like how spaced out the pages are – suiting most handwriting styles and not being dense with text. It’s a great way to revise what is covered in the classroom, presented in a fun and engaging manner.

I've not come across Mrs Wordsmith books before and I have to admit, I really like how they are accessible and well presented. They cover a massive range of English relating to the year 4 curriculum and will help either for home schooling or with home/school learning. I will be looking out for more in this series to help support my little one and nephew as they continue their education. This one is certainly humungous but it isn't daunting, dry or boring....it's exactly what you need.
