I decided to give this one a try to encourage our 2 cats to drink more water. I picked this one, because it was ceramic, dish washer safe, and would still function as a water bowl if the power goes out. Noise - It makes no noise whatsoever. It does not even make a trickle sound. Easy to Clean - I clean the fountain once a week. It takes only a few minutes to disassemble, wash all the pump pieces, and rinse the filters. Then I stick the rest into the dishwasher. I don't wash by hand because the ceramic is very heavy and slippery, and I know that dropping it while washing is very likely. So every weekend, I do an extra load in the dishwasher to wash this along with any other food mats, or other items I can throw in. I think it's also better this way, because the dishwasher will do a better job at sanitizing the ceramic parts. Assembly - It took a few minutes to read the instructions and figure out the first time, but after a couple times from cleaning and reassembling, it feels quick and easy now. Filters - I imagine this depends a lot on the quality of your water. I live in an area with EXTREMELY hard water. I use a Zerowater filter for our drinking water, and I use that to fill up the fountain. So the water is already filtered starting out, and the water fountain filters are used mainly to help keep the water clean for a week until I clean the fountain again. I stupidly forgot to order replacement filters in time to replace after 2 weeks, so we are now on week 4 and the filter seems to be doing fine. In the future, I will probably be replacing the filter after 3 weeks, to be safe. I have not noticed any slime, smells, or anything out of the ordinary as some users have mentioned. If you use unfiltered water to fill the fountain, I would imagine you would need to replace the filters much more often so that may be when the sliminess starts to happen. Drinking more water? I noticed that it does seem to catch their attention, and I feel like I witness them drinking more often than they did with regular bowls. I stopped using the carbon filters a long time ago. They got slimy after a day or two and constantly clogged and restricted the water flow from the pump. I have a Drinkwell Avalon and also a Seascape fountain, both of which have been running perfectly for years without the carbon/charcoal filter. No more slime, clogged pumps or weak/restricted water flow. The carbon filter's purpose is only to filter the water for taste/smell and since I only use filtered water in my fountains, using this filter was overkill. My pumps now stay clog free and the water flow is always strong and unrestricted. I do use the foam filters because those are the ones that surround the pump and help to trap food, hair and other debris from entering the pump. Since I have 3 cats drinking from the fountains, I change the water and rinse/clean the foam filters every 3 days. I do a thorough cleaning of the pumps every 3 or 4 weeks and change the foam filters about every 6 weeks. Both pumps have been running trouble free since ditching the carbon filters. **Q: If runs out of water, does unit shut off automatically?** A: Hi Peggy, great question! If the unit runs out of water you may burn out your pump, as it will not shut itself off. I am not disappointed at all in this purchase. I have owned the Original and Platinum fountains in the past and while they were decent products they were a headache to clean and maintain and they didn't exactly complement a homes dΓ©cor. Amazon delivered the fountain quickly and it was very easy to clean and get setup. The Seascape is very easy to clean when compared to the other two models of fountains I previously owned. I ran water through the charcoal filter before installing it to avoid charcoal dust at the bottom of the fountain and so far I have not seen any trace of charcoal dust in the water. The fountain is extremely quiet and you have to be very close to it to even hear it. It is much quieter than either of the two fountains I have previously owned and I suspect it is also quieter than the other ceramic fountains also sold by PetSafe. All of our cats took to it quickly and use it often. I only have two gripes with the fountain and they are both minor and would not keep me from buying another Seascape fountain. While the fountain looks great, I wish it came with more color choices.
