A Diamond in the Rough: The mashup you didn't know you needed in your life.
This game is a mix of XCOM turned based strategy gameplay and Mario exploration. Each world is divided into sections as are most Mario games but they are also broken into segments for each area. So, let's say you are in world 1-2, there may be a couple segments you have to explore or battle in to get through the 2nd act of world 1. The combat is very strategic, yes it starts off easy but it ramps up in difficulty quickly and you have to plan and play smart. The exploration areas in between battles offer up environmental puzzles, mazes, etc and many areas are blocked off by obstacles that you learn to eliminate as you play the game, this encourages you to go back and rock out the previous levels again for more collectibles, coins, etc. Many people seem to not like the Rabbids, which is understandable from their minigame collections, however they absolutely shine in this adaptation. I have to say that Rabbid Peach has made me literally lol many times so far. The humor throughout the scripting and little cut scenes is all great, and even the things that happen sometimes in battle will give you a laugh. -The graphical quality of this game is absolutely top notch! The people at Ubisoft clearly did this as a passion project and it shows in every scene. I did notice frame drops a couple of times but it was never actually during a battle. -The sound effects are incredible and the music consists of modified versions of the classic Mario tunes we all know and love. -All of the weapons have unique effects and every character has their strengths and weaknesses. You have to adapt your team or you will die horribly. Overall: Graphics 10/10 (Absolutely Beautiful artwork and animations) Sound: 10/10 Great Effects and the music is excellent. Gameplay: 10/10 if you are good at strategy games like XCOM and Fire Emblem, but it may be a little too hard for the strategy newbie or for small kids.

Far better than I expected !
Wow!!! This game is far better than I expected. I am not a Mario fan because I always die too much, as I fall a lot. But the good thing is you can't fall of the edge and die while exploring in this Mario game. This helps me love it. My son and I have been playing this every chance we can get since we got it. This is by far the second best game for the switch to date only topped by Zelda BOTW. We have 14 switch games, and this is sooo fun. It is also a challenge, makes you think. The game looks super nice... I think Mario never looked better. The game played well in handheld mode, and TV mode. Touch screen did not work, you need a controller. I prefer the pro-controler. While I am not a rabbids fan... they totally work in this game with Mario. The story starts off with an explanation as why they are there and they don't detract from the game, they simply add to the Mario charm. And also add fun and humor. While the majority of the game is single player, my son and I have enjoyed the co-op mode playing two people each on a battle board. We both have so much fun together, something Zelda will not allow. You do have to play single player first to unlock co-op mode. Only problem is the game is too short... I solved it today after a few days of non stop playing ... BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE. WOW!!! Now I can go back and replay levels, try the new challenge mode on each level and find the hidden objects I missed and there is also a new Ultimate Challenge Mode. This will keep me busy for a while. AND ... if that is not enough I bought the season pass as they promise more to come. I can't wait. If you have a switch, but this game you will not regret it.

Great game for the switch
What can I say. I haven’t been too impressed with Ubisoft. As much as people like Rayman, I’ve always thought its platforming uninspiring and boring. Assassins Creed has been sequeled to death and has become a bland experience. Enter Mario + Rabbids. Yes, this game is developed and published by Ubisoft, but this game is oozing Nintendo’s magic. The gameplay is addictive. I’ve never played Xcom but have been told it’s a simpler, more fun version. Take that for what it’s worth. I play M+R and keep having to the play next level. I have to keep trying to get more coins, better weapons, more power orbs. And obtaining these items aren’t a chore like they are in so many other games. It’s acually fun. The feel of the game is charming. I love Rabbid Peach so much. I am not the most jovial person, but I have laughed so much because of her sass. All of the characters, including the enemies and bosses, have all sorts of quirks. The baddies seem to tough when they’re attacking your team. But when you get one at the end of your colorful barrel, they cower in fear. Everything in this game is cute. And it even features a humorous musical number during a boss fight (which reminded me of a similar boss fight song in Conkers Bad Fur Day.) There are so many goodies to collect which strengthens the replay value. Instead of moving on to the next world, I have have to go back and complete all the new challenges in the old worlds and find anything I may have missed. Get this game. It’s fun. It’s cute. It’s colorful. The music is annoyingly catchy. If you’re like me you’ll be humming along to the themes from this game while you’re at work. Enjoy!

Mario+Rabbids+X-Com
When I first saw this game my reaction was, I assume, the same as most people's: "no" and "why?". However, I do enjoy a good turn-based strategy game and I really did like some of what I saw. The overall look is very colorful and eye-catching, and I found the rabbid dopplegangers funny; Rabbid Mario has a swarthy, cocksure posture (complete with toothpick-in-mouth) that makes me chuckle whenever I see it. So I preordered it, because I probably should take a break from Breath of the Wild anyway. Luckily, the game is really good. It deftly strikes a balance between the silliness of the circumstances and the rigidness of turn-based gameplay. The only contemporary game like this I can think of is X-Com (which I really enjoyed too) and by comparison Mario+Rabbids removes much of what can become tedious in that game. There's no base management (there are small skill-trees for each character), matches move at a quicker pace (some, like boss fights, can take awhile), and the action is bookended by "adventure" segments where you move your team around the area, solving puzzles and finding collectibles like weapons and concept art. I think of all the strategy games I've played, Mario+Rabbids has the broadest appeal. It's accessible, but challenging, and has a 'Looney Tunes' kind of humor that makes what your doing in the game much more enjoyable. My guess is playtime is about 20 hours, if you try to do everything maybe more, and they've announced that there will be DLC as well (story-related DLC, due 2018).

Charming Fun
The silly little DLC's, such as the "pixel pack" that came with the game since I pre-ordered it, are kind've dumb and pointless. I honestly didn't even know that would come with my copy of the game, but I couldn't really care less that it did, and it didn't do anything to enhance the gameplay experience. The amount of missions and activities that come with the game, without the purchase of DLC, are more than adequate, which is a relief. I was glad Ubisoft didn't gate off core features of the game and hold them for ransom. You're actually getting a full gameplay experience with the purchase of this title alone. It's got a really fun combat system, though I do wish it was just a little more challenging. The game comes with approximately 40+ main missions, with another extra 40 challenges, and then there's the co-op missions, which are also fun, but there's not point in having another friend to do them with you since it's essentially just passing control back and forth between players, and you're not doing anything simultaneously, which is a little disappointing. In all, there's around 60 hours worth of content if you do all of the missions and challenges and co-op missions, in case the amount of content is important to anybody. Though I'd say only around 35 hours worth of that content is doing the truly enjoyable stuff combat related stuff, the other 25 is spent walking around the worlds, which is oftentimes amusing, and the puzzles are fairly okay. While exploring the worlds is amusing, I do wish it had been cut down significantly, since it really doesn't add a whole lot to the experience, and sometimes it's just downright tedious. My only other complaint would be the little robot thing that guides you throughout your journey. I find it distracting, and I don't find it particularly funny or cute, aside from an occasionally clever line here and there. Those fairly minor complaints don't detract from the fact that this game contains an incredibly fun and inventive combat system, and it does contain quite a bit of personality and humor. And there's also a sequence that contains what is possibly my second favorite opera singing boss fight of all time (Conker's Bad Fur Day contains the first)

Fun puzzle style turn based battles! I was skeptical at first.
I love the thought and planning that goes into playing this game! My son says it's like a strategy board game. I read lots of reviews that made me think it would be fun, but the negative reviews worried me. I resorted to watching online videos of gameplay and game reviews. I'm glad I got this, it's one of my favorites. My 9 y.o. Son doesnt choose to play this(he isn't patient at all though) but he loves to give his input while watching me! But my friend's 9 y.o. loves it , and we compare notes. Its Turn based battle, my 3 characters get turns to move, and attack inflicting damage on the bad guy rabbids, shrinking their health bars. Then they get turns to do the same to my team. Mario Peach and Luigi (and their mishmashed rabbid counterparts) have weapons and acrobatic skills. You Plan out your steps of attack on the bad guy rabbids (they're oddly cute, especially the zebra/mohawk looking ones) and then watch your character execute what can be multiple steps/ actions, to clear the level/area/challenge. Some levels are easy, but you can bet they get more challenging! They prepare you bit by bit, adding skills and tips along the way. You collect power orbs to improve you characters abilities, and coins to buy new and improved weaponry! This game is so satisfying... I get invested in battles because I am striving for perfection and efficiency, the planning and brainstorming lend themselves to that accomplishment when you prevail over a challenging situation.

I'll go warm up my crow to eat, because man I was so wrong about this game.
When I first heard the leaks of this game described, I was aghast. I've never played the rabbids games, because they never interested me. When "Rayman's Raving Rabbids" launched on Wii, to much success, I never once even thought of playing or touching it. I saw it once, and said "Why not just release a Rayman game? I'd play that." and never once gave it another thought. So, when I heard a Mario game was coming out, I was stoked. Then I head "& Rabbids" and was very confused and disappointed. Then I saw gameplay and saw it was an XCom Style tactical game. I thought the world was playing some joke on me. But at e3 coverage, I watched, and was impressed with what I saw, so I decided to try it. It's a Mario game. It can't be bad, right? Well, I would like to apologize to Ubisoft immensely. They created a Xcom style tactical game, that is sometimes unforgiving to newcomers of the genre, and made a skillfully fun "Easy to learn, hard to master" game. I thought the Rabbids would grate on me, due to the gibberish speak, but thankfully they are not overdone, and the puns, humor, and sometimes even toilet humor actually warrants a chuckle. I'm about 15 hours in, and half way through the game, and not once have I bored from it. Battles can get intense, and make you think, and for those who are less experienced you can turn on an easy mode at any time. The bosses are creative, and the story is rather unique for a Mario game, this is not your regular save the princess style story from our red capped friend. There are 8 party members you can unlock. You start off with 3, Mario, Luigi Rabbid, and Peach Rabbid". Peach rabbid is actually very funny, in that she's always such a diva, parodying a social media obsessed teen. There are tons of mechanics in battles, it isn't simply move+shoot. The characters are all very different as well, acting as classes. Rabbid Luigi for instance, specializes in elemental damage and effects, while Luigi himself is essentially a sniper, with low HP for this reason. You can only equip 3 party members (at least, 15 hours into the game, I don't know if it changes for end game) so you have to think. If you put 3 low HP high damage characters in, you could be putting yourself at major risk. The game keeps introducing new mechanics, or new skills every hour or so, or you can unlock them every hour, and there are a surprising amount of collectable art, models, soundtrack, and gear scattered about, urging you to replay levels when you have unlocked later abilities, helping replay-ability. So far, I can't put this game down, and man, I really am going to go out and admit how wrong I was. Ubisoft proved me wrong ten fold, this game oozes quality and charm, and makes me yearn for a sequel on it, and that this trend continues, as the gameplay is something stellar. Fans of XCom, I haven't played Xcom much, so I can't say how it stacks up, however you will find that 50% in this game, actually means 50%, rather than "MISS". There is a multiplayer mode, and challenge levels, though these are unlocked later after chapter (or world) 1, so you can't team up in the main game as far as I know. For those on the fence, rent it if you need to. I want this game on my shelf, as it's a dead knockout out to me, and right now (At the time of this writing, October with Mario Odyssey is coming fast though!) second on switch only to breath of the wild in my opinion. I'm not even a tactical game fan, as I usually am really bad at them, but the learning curve is very gradual in this game, and it only punishes you if you want it to (you can dip down to easy mode at any time to bypass this, but I like the challenge in this game and I may go pick up XCom after I play through this fully.

A Very Rewarding Adventure/RPG With Good Humor
Mario + Rabbids is one of the best Switch games out there. The battle style is turn based with movement across a confined area. There are different ways to take cover, and some of the barriers are destructible. As you progress through the game you will receive new weapons which not only increase in power, but in the types of effects they have on enemies (honey holds them in place, ink takes away some of their abilities etc). Some of the battles can take up to 30 minutes, but generally a battle will be 5-15 minutes. The depth of the battle system is well done with the ability to use team moves as well as attacking as a lone character. The four worlds are vibrant with a fair amount of puzzle solving. The worlds do have secret areas that emphasize exploration, but for the most part they are linear and do not allow you to stray off the path. Overall, this is a great adventure/rpg game that will encourage you to keep playing even after the game is beaten. There is a co-op mode that is really fun and requires good communication with your teammate. There is also a robust amount of DLC available and Amiibo support. Worth the price!
